New York show request thread

May 04, 2008 09:14PM | New York show request thread
All right y'all. Check the front page of the site, and then read this:

I can't enforce anything here (or, rather, I'm not willing to - I imagine I might be able to limit posting to New York-based ISPs, but it'd take more work than I'm willing to do to find out how), but here's what I'd like for this thread.

1) if you're not going to be at the show, I'd rather you didn't make suggestions as to what I ought to play. this thread is for people who'll be in the audience. not for people who're looking forward to hearing the live set later. (which is fine of course, I am permanently flattered that people listen to recordings of my shows, don't get me wrong. but the audience comes first.)
2) they're your keystrokes, but "Cubs in Five"? "Going to Georgia"? "This Year"? I already know people want to hear those.

People who have already bought tickets and post pics of themselves holding said tix/links to such pics are liable to catch more of my ear. People who post jokey pics of themselves holding fake tickets, or who photoshop mockups, etc., will be visited by Lord Satan in the night, and their souls will be forfeit.

Let me know, New Yorkers!

Now this really tempts me to prove my mad PS skillz to enforce a visitation by the Horned One (especially if HE comes in the guise of Ray Wise...) winking smiley

"Name: Michael Wojciechowski
Order Number: MAH3WY948 [Order Status]
Date of Purchase: Sunday, May 04 2008 at 6:31 PM PDT

ALL SALES ARE FINAL"

Hm I guess that works, but now everyone can just copy the email confirmation format and make it up. Whatever no worries. I'll be there, have been lucky to make it out to CA, NY, DC, Philly shows back in March. I was the poor dude who had to ask you a question after the show with that crazy NoisePop interviewer lady.

Anyway, some suggestions off the top of my head..

Dutch Orchestra Blues
Please Come Home To Hamngatan
Going To Bogota
Bad Waves

much love, glad all is well!

guys I appreciate your enthusiasm but putting in 10+ different suggestions just causes my eyes to glaze over, how 'bout "here is the song I would like to hear" ok?? xo jd
May 05, 2008 12:09AM | Re: New York show request thread
Wow, John, this is really cool of you. I don't have a camera, but I do have a scanner.

Here's a handful of songs that, if you were to play any of them, would make my day....

Going to Bridlington
Home Again Garden Grove
The Mess Inside
Ontario
Love Cuts The Strings

Thanks! I can't wait for the show.
May 05, 2008 01:02AM | Re: New York show request thread
i have no scanner and no printer. this is blurry, but my cat is in it, so that should even out any misgivings about the picture. (if it doesn't work, here is a link

if that picture doesn't show up, or is too blurry to suffice, i took this with my iSight just now and i know it's backwards.

the back reminds me to keep the ticket in a cool dry place.
if the linking fails, iSight picture externally hosted

***

my only suggestion is either "Maize Stalk Drinking Blood" or "Evening in Stalingrad." or, you know. both. but just one, either one, would probably fill me with enough transcendent joy to cure AIDS. no promises on that last part. But,
anything that you play? i am ridiculously excited about. thank you!!

Well, my ticket is in America and I am not, so it is a tricky matter for me to take my picture with it. Maybe you can just take my word? We're all friends here, hey?

Anyway, I know you played it a couple times last fall, so it would make my evening if you could play "Soft Targets." Since we're being trusting and all, I'd also note that I will give good American dollars to the Farm Sanctuary if this happens. But everyone else's suggestions would be fine, too. I'm just glad I don't have to shout this at you during the show, now.
May 05, 2008 07:01AM | Re: New York show request thread
I know I'm kinda breaking the rules and all - not going to either show (not even being in the same hemisphere), but I'll humbly suggest that someone might like to think about suggesting Warm and Lonely Planet.
Though, that is kinda obscure.
Just a nice song, and it popped into my head as soon as I read 'intimate show'.
May 05, 2008 11:21AM | Re: New York show request thread

I'd like to third the suggestion of Going to Bridlington, which would have been my Zoop! request last year had unreleased stuff not been verboten.

Also - Flight 717: Going to Denmark would be pretty sweet. Just sayin'.

Thank you for your consideration.

There is one song that I've regretted not seeing live, though it seems to be a semi-standard. John could you please play Twin Human Highway Flares? I'd also love to hear a live cover of Wild World by The Birthday Party.

Thanking you in advance for an awesome show, with or without my request(s).

Yay! Buttz, LOL!
-Abraham Lincoln

Every song is a Schweppes commercial.
May 05, 2008 04:01PM | Re: New York show request thread
I wish all bands would do this kind of thing.
Glad you're well enough to kick out the jams again, John.
May 05, 2008 04:17PM | Re: New York show request thread
I'm picking up at will call and am too paranoid to post a confirmation number. Anyhow, my request isn't so obscure. But since my wife has agreed to indulge my MG obsession and brave Friday rush hour on the Schuylkill to drive up to NY with me, it would be nice for her to hear her favorite song, "Broom People."

Whatever you decide to play, I think it's great you're even asking the question. Looking forwad to the show.

ZM in order kthx
May 05, 2008 08:08PM | Re: New York show request thread
I'm not sure how much fun it would actually be for John, but yeah, I always thought it would be cool to once in a while have a set of a whole recording like (insert your favorite tmg record).

That being said, I'm really bummed about having to miss this benefit show. Have fun everyone!

And for god's sake, someone record it please!

ZM in order kthx

as the esteemed mr nall knows, I've long wanted to do an album-in-order set HOWEVER the album-in-order set is now a totally overdone concept so I will not be doing any such thing! HOWEVER were I to do so, you can believe I won't be advertising it, notifying anybody, sending out damn press releases about it to max out on publicity etc

grumble grumble bands who do this don't know how to be cool, hell in a handbasket, etc

Man Missy, that tatt looks great!
May 05, 2008 09:25PM | Re: New York show request thread
Um... so, can someone please promise to record this show and then post it up here for those unfortunate souls (like me) who are unable to attend to hear these "solo, more intimate songs"?

That would be wonderful.

Thanks in advance, man with microphone and people standing near microphone who will keep their chatter during the songs to a minimum!
May 05, 2008 10:00PM | Re: New York show request thread
um, on the front page when it says "this weekend" it means next weekend, right? just checking, because I very easily get such things mixed up, and I wouldn't want to miss this, especially since I've always wanted to see the inside of that building.

anway, here's me and my tix:

...and I would like to suggest Noctifer Birmingham.

it's good to hear you're up to performing. also, I am enjoying all the photos of arms, cats, and blurry faces--looking forward to seeing all y'all at the show.

okay, enough dinking around on the internets. time to go make oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.
May 05, 2008 10:47PM | Re: New York show request thread
here's my ticket!

i'd especially love to hear "going to buffalo" in honor of my good friend june who is moving to that fair city in less then two months. sadly she can't make it to the show, as she's busy being a coroner 3,000 miles away, but it would surely mean the world to us.

looking forward to the show so, so much, whatever the setlist entails!

thanks,
jess
May 05, 2008 10:59PM | Re: New York show request thread
yes it is actually next weekend I am easily confused these days
May 05, 2008 11:04PM | Re: New York show request thread
John, if you're in the mood i would die of happiness to hear Evening in Stalingrad or Going to Maine...

am hugely looking forward to this no matter what the setlist is though!

EDIT:
(since everybody else is doing it, for authenticity's sake:
i bought mine for will-call, Order Number: M4L29W4LH)
