Old Live Recordings

April 25, 2008 10:24AM | Re: Old Live Recordings
Yeah, so I've been watching this back and forth and here's my 2 cents: Nall made a request: only download these tracks if you agree not to distribute them on a song-by-song basis. I understand his reasoning to be that when they are separated into songs with only the rare ones distributed, the songs become commodities -- little rare jewels that come with bragging rights. It's a bit undignified to some. That seems like a fair trade off -- he's not asking you not to listen to one song at a time, just not to share song-by-song -- and the reality is, while Nall can't stop you from doing it, if he sees it too persistently, he won't distribute any more sets. That sucks for all of us, particularly because that Absolute Kosher show was fucking awesome and I really want to hear more stuff -- an agreement not to share single songs seems like a small, small price to pay for continued access to a string of amazing stuff. It's kind of like the other string where people are bitching about not having easy and cheap access to the Get Lonely bonus tracks. But they're bonus tracks -- by definition they should be a challenge to get -- that's part of the fun. If you don't want to cough up the cash, find someone to trade with -- particularly because we are continuously inundated with all kinds of cool demos, live tracks -- not to mention studio albums like once a year or more. I'm still struggling to buy all the commercial stuff, while downloading live and demo stuff from here. And people are bitching about three tracks -- which for the record are commercially available -- seems a bit ungrateful. Anyways, my 2 cents.

That's my feeling about the unshared shows, though. "Oh you've heard that, but I bet you haven't heard this? Wanna? Gotta trade." It can come across as a pissing contest which seems to be setting up a false hierarchy where there should be a true community, especially to newbies and to remote fans who get a show every few years/albums...

Conversely, I think the bragging rights disappear when the single track is shared. You only have to search this forum for evidence of the teasers. (Also, once you press play&record, isn't the song commodified?)

I used to be keen on sharing like for like, too, but there's always a concern that you send something to a guy on the far side of the world and then he doesn't send anything back. This has happened to me. Twice. With members of the tMG 'community'. Gotta have faith that one day...

It's in no way about bragging rights -- everyone should hear Moon Song.

I'll prove it.

nall, not interested in false hierarchies.

Great Extra Glenns set, thanks!

Can anyone give me the backstory to the Extra Glens? How it came about, how often they form up, etc.?

Can't find any such info either here or on the general web.

So, I'd love to share the shows I horded off the hub, but where would I start?

I guess the best thing to do would be to post a list of all the tracks I have and let you choose for yourself.

yar.
