Torch Song

July 29, 2012 06:41PM | Torch Song
So, I had googled Torch Song and forgotten to put "the mountain goats" into the search as well (it was one of those times that you assume the Internet knows what you're talking about), and the first thing that came up was the Wikipedia article for "Torch song" which explains that "A torch song is a sentimental love song, typically one in which the singer laments an unrequited or lost love, either where one party is oblivious to the existence of the other, where one party has moved on, or where a romantic affair has affected the relationship."

Probably has nothing to do with the song, and maybe everyone but me is aware of this already, but it just struck me as interesting, and as the kind of thing that JD might do on purpose.

It's also the name of a song by Marillion

It's also a phrase; to "carry a torch for" someone is to have feelings for that person, often unrequited. I'd say the reference is intentional. It's pretty easy to read the song as one of longing for someone he's watching from a distance.

1840 - Hounds in Sonora, Mexico, invent music, write bogus "History of Music" to preserve anonymity.
