Best of Nothing For Juice

July 27, 2012 06:00PM | Best of Nothing For Juice
Nothing For Juice is an album I hear little about round these parts and is currently the only MG studio album I don't own. So in preparation for my purchase of it,what's your favourite NFJ track?
July 27, 2012 07:28PM | Re: Best of Nothing For Juice
"Heights" is pretty awesome
July 27, 2012 07:33PM | Re: Best of Nothing For Juice
If I was only allowed to choose one, then probably "Going To Scotland".

If I were allowed to choose several... "I Corinthians 13: 8-10", "Full Flower", "Going To Reykjavik", "Going To Kansas", "Waving At You", and "Then The Letting Go".

Why's everyone in this thread a f***ing Mountain Goats fan?!

This album has so many great tracks. I've had hardcore love affairs (gross?) with It Froze Me and Waving at You. Everybody loves Going to Scotland and 1 Corinthians 13:8-10, for good reason. I love this version of Going to Kansas (though I also love the Hound Chronicles version). Then The Letting Go is a super solid opener, and nicely features Rachel's bass work (plus the title comes from Dickinson!). I will also lay down the law for Blueberry Frost (but I prefer the 1996 VPRO version).

So I've failed to answer your question. But it's a good album.

may be my favorite all time MGs album, or tied w/ FFG. I don't think there's any song that's less than perfect on it.

i know we've done lists of favorite AD and after LPs, but have we ever done list of favorite pre-AD records? Anyways, NFJ and FFG would probably be my top two. i'm envious you get to learn this album for the 1st time. it is full of fun treats and surprises.

do I have to hit you over the head with it?

You creeps are forgetting "Alabama Nova"; one of my favorite all-time tMG songs. "Going to Scotland" is the definitive choice, but "Nova" and the updated version of "Alpha Double Negative: Going to Catalina", and ALSO "Going to Bogotá" are all complete standouts.

I actually sent a text to Nigel a few days ago telling him how much I love love love NfJ. Nice going, WC; it's climbing my list as well. I mean that as sensually as possible.

Album has some great songs, but it"s the worst of the pre-4ad records by a large margin. It"s really inconsistent and a long pointless noise section that grates on me every time.

aah this might be the hardest album to purse a favorite from for me, but it's gotta be Waving At You for me. I love so many of the other songs, but It Froze Me always touched me in a way I didn't quite understand.

You could say it froze me.

Absolutely adore both Heights and Then The Letting Go. The album as a whole is pretty fantastic, though.

what did i come down here for?

I like the Orange Ball songs, so Orange Ball of Pain sticks out, but I'm also a massive fan of the Alpha Couple so Alpha Double Negative is a definite plus. Also, I like Corinthians because John Darnielle's work with Biblical passages inspired me to start my own poetry series for Bible verses; it's an awesome common ground for a non-believer at a Jesuit school.

Ey-up new folk! Like Cyrus, I love leccy Kansas and Full Flower (also: they make great alarms). But ultimately gonna have to echo Ian some >> You creeps are forgetting "Alabama Nova"; one of my favorite all-time tMG songs. <<.

WAVING AT YOU - although it should have made 'get lonely' too.

'and i went to buy you something
but i caught myself in time'

always reminded me of:

'and as i was crossing our doorstep,
i hesitated just a moment there.
remembered the day we moved into our small house
'til the vision got too vivid to bear.'
(moon over goldsboro)

That moment of forgetting you no longer have that person .. then the pain of remembering that you no longer have them that follows!.. Such a bad and too real feeling, well summed up in both songs.

Welcome to the forums, Connor! Hope you stick around.

Thanks! I've lurked for a while here when looking for unreleased rarities and realized that as my own collection gets bigger, it might be nice to be able to contribute by joining the forums.

I had never heard of Bright Eyes until I saw tMG on tour with them in Baldwinsville, NY. I still haven't really attempted to listen to any of their stuff but I'm told it's decent.

Back on topic, though, Nothing For Juice really is an interesting album, and I haven't really sat and listened to it in a long time. It's neat that this thread has sort of inspired revisiting the old tMG stuff; listening to Ghana is never a bad time for me. Have fun with the album smiling smiley

You must be thinking of Thug4Lyfe.

Anyhow, I really dig "It Froze Me" and "Full Flower", but a lot of those mentioned by others are great.

EDIT: Definitely all of the "Going to..."s on this album as well.
