This is excellent. The trio band setup works really well with horns like this. And PPH is singing background vocals!

do I have to hit you over the head with it?

I've never been more hyper (in a good way) bopping around to something as bleak as "all is loooooost" - that contrast of musical and lyrical moods is amazing.

The horns are great but I'm all about that PPH bass line.

The song is also magnificent.
July 25, 2012 10:10AM | Re: Whoa. Horns.
Matthew E White did the horns. He has a new record of his own coming out this fall via Hometapes.

Also, PPH backing vocals is exactly what this band has always needed more of. Love it.

And the bass line! Yes!

This song is so much fun.

Man these horns are totally rocking. And I'm loving that such a bouncy tune has such dark and despairing lyrics
July 25, 2012 10:21AM | Re: Whoa. Horns.
Just caught that gnarly PPH bass tear-up under the end of the track on the second (ok, like 5th) time through - no wonder the girls go crazy for a sharp dressed man!

The rawness of both the bass and horns is brilliant. So stoked for full lp.sounds like it will be very different from anonymous arrangement, which I also loved.

The triumphant return of PPH on backing vocals! This makes me happier than anything else about the album.

That's because some of us girls want his wardrobe. winking smiley But agreed, this is amazing.

Near the beginning- "Sometimes you try to freeze time until the ??? are a blur of spinning wheels"
Anyone catch what that was?

Also trying to puzzle out the narrative. Cry For Judas is near the beginning of the album. And what is this trying to say about youth exactly? Hrrr. Can't wait for October 2nd!

I'm a little bummed to find out that Merge uploaded the track 22 days ago and I'm only hearing it now on their soundcloud site.

But that's mostly because OMG THE SONG IS SOOOOOOO GOOD!!!!!!!

It says on the soundcloud page that the track was uploaded on July 3rd at 16:06:58 +0000. I don't have access to iTunes at work but oddly enough I can get to soundcloud.

Ha, I'm sitting on a bus full of screaming 6-year-olds, jamming my phone's speaker into my ear and trying so hard to listen to this. I'm going to sneak off and listen to it in the bathroom asap.
July 25, 2012 11:30AM | Re: Whoa. Horns.
The horns remind me of Get Lonely, but the writing is much more active, the way it is in AED. The song is overall great, and I like it much better as JD's promo song than I did Birth of Serpents (although ive grown fond of that too). Also joining in the love of that bass. I'm so excited now I've woken my girlfriend!!

"But not me,
I'm gonna crawl,
I'm gonna crawl,
I'm gonna crawl,
Back to the sea."

"Goddamit, I love John Coltrane."

Dolla--don't feel bad about missing it for 22 days, my guess was that they had it set as a private track until this morning. Note that all of its plays have been racked up this week (probably today).

PPH dominates this track. DOMINATES IT. Love him.

Interesting - the acoustic part reminded me a little of "Dance Music" at least at the outset.
