buying Tallahassee

This morning I was cleaning out my old room and came across a school journal from grade 6 (age 12), you know the ones where you tell the teacher about your weekend?
There was one entry dated February 10, in which I write of purchasing Tallahasse, which i thought i’d share

10/02/2003
On the weekend I played soccer and my team played against the purple team from Ulverstone Primary School, which is my old school. It was fun to play against my old school, I recognised some people, but not everyone. We lost 3-2. After soccer mum took me to Sanity so that I could by the CD that I have been saving up for. It is called “Talahasse” (sic.) and is by a band called the Mountain Goats and it cost $25. I heard a song from the album on the radio a few weeks ago when my sister gave me a lift to school The song I heard was called ‘No Children’.
On Sunday I took my dog Blue for a walk on our beach and listened to the mountain goats album on my sister’s diskman. So far ‘No Children’ is still my favourite song by them but I also like a song called ‘Peakocks’. I think that the Mountain Goats will be my new favourite band.

I think my 12 year old self and I would probably get along pretty well.

haha, i think my obsession with tMG was kind of atypical, i distinctly remember listening to the Black Eyed Peas without irony, if you can imagine such a thing confused smiley

I'm surprised that you heard tMG on the radio!

Also my 12 year old self was all about U2 and a little Pearl Jam.

Your twelve year old self sounds awesome.

When I was fourteen I went to the store to purchase Tallahassee on vinyl. (Yes, my first record.) There was a really nice salesperson there and he agreed about the amazingness of tMG and told me his favorite song was Wild Sage. Of course, me being me, I squeaked out a "yeah!" and ran away, but it was the kind of the coolest thing ever to happen to fourteen year old me. I suppose I was awesome?

Then again, I really liked Fall Out Boy when I was twelve. I still hold a sort of fond nostalgia for them, even if some of the things they do annoy me in retrospect. (Stage Gay. Just no. Gross and appropriative. Stupid fandom.)

I'm not familiar with Fall Out Boy's music but I always wished them well because of the Simpsons reference.

I'm 38 and I love m'f'nFOB! Have done for years. 2nd album (FUCT) is top 10 of the 00s for me. They're my home-stretch soundtrack on the Friday evening commute, week in, week out.

I was 12 when I started listening to tMG. It was the age when I transitioned into listening to cool stuff, and I remember feeling a particular sort of connection to the Coroner's Gambit. I have trouble recalling how I thought and listened to things at 12, as I had been exposed to much less music and was generally stupid back then. Liking tMG was about all that my 12-year-old self and I have in common, thankfully.

I loved Fall Out Boy when I was 14. Johnp makes me feel good about myself for still being able to really get down with "From Under The Cork Tree." Dear Lord, I love that album.

Yeah, Sanity always is. Though, being a Sanity store, I'd assume Tam is from Australia (like me), and unfortunately $25 is kind of a common price for CDs here. Though I don't know, maybe when you factor in different economies/currencies/standard wages etc., it might be roughly equal to American prices? In any case, Sanity stores are generally pretty bad.

That's a cool diary entry too. Especially for being 12 years old!

yeah $25 is about the Australian standard. It is kind of a lot, but I think I speak for all present when I say $25 is a totally reasonable price for an album so soul destoryingly awesome as is Tallahassee.

I've never heard this "Tallahassee" album, but I definitely can get behind the love for From Under the Cork Tree. Completely solid album from start to finish.

i didnt want to contribute to the off-topic-ness but is it weird that i didnt care for From Under The Cork Tree? I liked the first album a lot (i think i was.... maybe 15 when it came out?) and i was excited for their next album but i just didnt enjoy it and havent enjoyed the stuff they've done since.
July 11, 2012 02:59PM | Re: buying Tallahassee
My 12yo self was all about a-ha's first two albums and the first Bruce Hornsby. All on cassette.
July 11, 2012 03:19PM | Re: buying Tallahassee
My 12-y.o. self was all about Kiss' Love Gun and Led Zeppelin II, each one of maybe 8 albums I owned at the time.

Not at all. Take This To Your Grave is a great record, a bit more punky, with points to prove, but FUCT just ices the cake a bit thicker without ever being saccharine and has hooks that'd make Joe Frazier jealous. Diminishing returns set in after that (i.m.o.), but we still got e.g.(Coffee's For Closers) later.

HH&L on cassette, SD on vinyl.

I didn't think Infinity on High was that bad. My friends listened to it enough in my presence that I grew somewhat fond of it.

14 year old me: U2, REM (Reconstruction and War on promo vinyl were both life-changing, and they are still the copies I listen to), Dylan and the Beatles. With a little Kiss Alive II and Zappa & the Mothers thrown in, I think on cassette. I sniffed around Maiden but didn't get into them for real until 16.

I feel this thread is no longer about Tallahassee.
