the Alpha wiki beta

July 04, 2012 09:06AM | the Alpha wiki beta
There has been talk of starting a wiki dedicated to The Mountain Goats (and everything related to the band), but nothing seemed to come of it. So, I've taken the liberty of trying to start one! It remains to be seen whether it will become a towering beacon of enlightenment built on solidarity and mutual respect, or drown in a sea of broken promises and forgotten dreams. Either way, there will be fireworks.

It's called The Alpha Wiki, and the address is www.thealphawiki.org

The idea is to hopefully end up with something half as good as This Might Be A Wiki, which has been an immensely useful resource to me as a casual TMBG fan. As you can see, it's not much to look at right now though. I've tried adding a couple of tentative pages and playing around a bit, trying to figure things out. Probably best to wait with adding too many pages of data until it's officially "opened", in case I tamper with some code and the whole thing comes crashing down, but feel free to play around a bit.

If anyone would like to help out in terms of design or computer-y stuff, please get in touch!

Why's everyone in this thread a f***ing Mountain Goats fan?!

this is awesome, Evil E. Thanks for doing this. I hope it continues to grow.

I'll help. I've done wikis before—back end and front end. Get at me and let me know what I can do!

do I have to hit you over the head with it?

Haven't designed one before but let me know if you need help writing/editing/etc.

I created an account as pianistman, and would love to assist in the writing portion if need be. This could be very, very cool.

I have no idea how any of this would work so am less than useless to you with setting this up, however, as far as stuff to include goes, you know what I thought would be nice to try and do? Does anyone remember that Flickr page missy set up with a gallery of CCTTST cover art? I'd love to see something like that again. I don't even know if that's the sort of thing you could think about putting in the wiki.

(I did a search and found the link to missy's page, but it's private sad smiley )

Well, it's worth asking Missy if she'd be interested in sharing the photos or a link to them for the wiki.

Also, there should be some archiving of JD's tMG-related tweets. Today (as noted in another thread) he posted a photo of an old Tallahassee notebook, with some original lyrics to See America Right. [twitter.com]

Also, this gem:

The Mountain Goats ‏@mountain_goats
one last notebook related thing: original draft of "Peacocks" was way more sexually explicit & I'm totally not joking actually

Holey moley this is an awesome undertaking - thanks for taking the first step! I hope all of the gurus come out of the wordwork to contribute toward making this the best resource it could be.

Great to see so many who are positive to the project and want to help! Definitely want as many as possible to contribute to the writing once things get going. The trickier parts are the designing and computer-y parts, and I'll be contacting a few of the above regarding those. Feel free to post here or e-mail me directly if you want to help with those.

A CCTTST cover art gallery should certainly be possible! Referring to and quoting tweets should certainly be possible, too. Like trivia about songs and albums. Not sure about archiving all tMG related tweets though; might be tricky sorting out the relevant ones.

And I may as well ask if there are any requests when it comes to content and features?

i think there is a widget you can use to collect an individual's tweets. and a set of hash tag tweets. i'll ask one of my computer geek friends.

Well, a widget and a wiki feature or extension are different things. I think. Maybe I'm getting my terms confused here. But perhaps something like that could be possible; storing all the tweets from JD's account (and possibly other relevant accounts), and maybe displaying the latest ones on the wiki's front page. Not an essential feature, but guess it would make it easier searching through the tweets.

Merch archive. I was thinking specifically shirts but the various pressings of records/cassettes may interest people as well.
