ALWAYS.

(One time I bought one of the oop tMG lps on ebay [acronym city] and whomever I bought it from through in a Dinu Lipatti lp as a bonus. I thought it was really funny/cool)

Asking to download stuff you can buy or John has said "don't ask to download this here" is clearly bad form...

But what about selectively-released stuff ("All Survivors Pack"winking smiley, or one-off mp3s ("Sign of The Crow 2"winking smiley? There was clearly a mix of the two going on in the initial post, I'm just trying to understand the harm in trying to hear something that exists physically only as a limited collectors item ("Enoch" &c.).

Well, Sign of the Crow 2 was released on the forums, so that's fair game. For out of print stuff like All Survivors Pack, I'm not sure sharing full albums on the forum is kosher, but I don't think many would fault you for looking around on google.

I would say anything that had an official release should just not be asked about here in terms of getting a DL - not really all that hard, there's plenty of places to look for music online if that's how you're choosing to find it, just don't ask to DL releases on the site paid for the by the guy who put it out.

Stuff like Sign of the Crow has also been played live which is actively supported and openly posted/traded so why be compelled to go to the less legit avenue of getting things, come into the light!

I dunno, I feel like this is a gathering place for Mountain Goats fans new and old, and I would not fault someone for asking to hear "Come, Come To The Sunset Tree" without paying $150 on eBay. I don't see how seeking out-of-print, non-iTunesable releases is different from trading live boots; the chance to be there is past (except to those with exhorbitant means/poor fiscal planning) and these people just want the joyous scraps that remain. I would of course defer to our gracious host, but just my two cents, and I don't think (?) he's really talked about sharing collector extras that were conceived to become quickly unavailable... apart from maybe, arguably, saying that the person who won Eugene Sue can do whatever they want with it.

CCTTST isn't out of print, though. It just has bad distro.
July 11, 2012 07:09PM | Re: I'm going to ask all my questions and then go away.
The worst distro.

I believe JD's point on the OOP but still legit-released stuff (like All Survivor's Pack) is that JD feels like there are certain things that are more exciting because they are limited--take, for example, his propensity for doing the "I'm going to do this once and only here and only for the people in the room and that's it" type of live show. You can agree or disagree with that if you like, but as it's his stuff it's also kind of his call. So that's why it's not valid to share that kind of thing.

Back in my day...

When I first got into the band there wasn't much in the way of downloads and the mall didn't carry any of John's albums. I ended up emailing John to find out where I could get his stuff. I was young and impaitent and in the nicest way John pointed out that half the fun of collecting music is the collecting part. He urged me to use the yellow pages to find record stores and hunt for them. He was totally right. Now it is a lot easier to find stuff online, you can find almost anything. Flex that Google-fu! I bet it will feel a whole lot better and sound sweeter after the search than if someone just emails you a torrent link of everything.

WORD UP to this. I had so much fun searching out all the obscure stuff I hadn't heard--first the full lengths, then out of print 7"s and on down the rabbit hole...
