No cassette format reissue? :'(

I feel your pain.
May 01, 2012 01:58PM | Re: REISSUE: Hound Chronicles & Hot Garden Stomp
i can see why there's no cassette.

John makes a good point in the liner notes that the way in which that cassette (and all the early ones i assume, but correct me if i'm wrong) was put out, was a function of the rapidity with which it could be done at large(ish) volumes

Sing.
Record.
Get it out there for trading etc.

To re-release that on cassette would be a nice nod to the originals but, would in my opinion, be a little... well, is gauche the right word here? It would all seem a bit forced, as i imagine it's quicker to put out a CD these days and so, if anything, that's as much of a modern nod to the original as we can get.

Shoot me down in flames, though, if you wish.

I just wanna hear the songs smiling smiley

eta: there are a lot commas in that post. i apologise... i have a habit of just dropping them in willy-nilly.

I see that, I see it. But I still want everything on tape, not least so I can listen to it in the kitchen w/o having to tape it first. And I think it's a valid format, prematurely buried & dug up & relicified - though these days it's quicker just put out a download, surely? (Plus there's hardly been a rush on.) (p.s. excited on your behalf at getting to get it home and hear 'em for the first time!)

while Drag City are putting out Silver Jews' Dime Map/Arizona Record on tape when as far as I'm aware they were never tapes in the first place.

7" and LP*/CD respectively.
(*not 10" per DC's recent update)
The latter may's well be a flexidisc for all its structural rigour. I'd been holding back on Dime Map classing ~£15 as 'too much for a 7"'.

I wonder what the exact source is for the reissue? I also wonder (don't laugh at me) how good the sound quality will be.

I've been wondering about this myself. The sound quality on the original tapes isn't stellar to begin with, so I'm curious about how much cleanup work (if any) they've put into this.
May 01, 2012 03:12PM | Re: REISSUE: Hound Chronicles & Hot Garden Stomp
For PSOTF, BMF and Ghana, a lot of those songs were originally on cassettes. The mastering facility I used had some nice de-noising equipment, so the end product sounded a lot better/clearer (IMHO) than the original source tapes. I'm sure the same will be done with the Shrimper tapes.
May 01, 2012 09:02PM | Re: REISSUE: Hound Chronicles & Hot Garden Stomp
As long as the only noise they are removing is tape hiss, I'm cool with it. I have no desire to hear "cleaned-up" versions of these songs.

And the reason I want them on tape is because I have delusions about analog purity being an important thing. Plus I just love tapes.
May 01, 2012 11:50PM | Re: REISSUE: Hound Chronicles & Hot Garden Stomp
No tape rerelease because those cassettes are meant to be special finds man. Can't reissue them!

sad smiley I waited and refreshed the page in case an icon hadn't loaded or something. Aside RE: June 20-year-old lofi rereleases, funny that this isn't, while Drag City are putting out Silver Jews' Dime Map/Arizona Record on tape when as far as I'm aware they were never tapes in the first place.
I didn't know this was happening! Yay! Although I'll be picking up the LP, not the tape or CD. I would be much more jazzed about the tMG reissues if they got the vinyl treatment, as I've recently acquired both cassettes and don't really see the point of CDs anymore.

I'm not gonna lie that's a pretty terrible name for a group, post-rock or not.

Also good post rock band names:
"Let 'em Riot"
"We're Fucking" <--- may be better for a punk band

analog purity being important with lo-fi recordings is certainly a delusion

CLEARLY, this is the winner. And I certainly hope no one actually thinks I would name a band that. >_>

Should it read 'preserving' or 'persevering'?

Both of them work well.

Busy down this way & being online is one of the last things in the world that I do. Not concerned if you believe that this is me or not, but I did want to clarify a few things to the faithful & god knows that publicists as an oracle would be like me shitting through my 6 yr olds mouth, so I won't do that:

1) This was to be a single disc but ran slightly over the limit for a single disc so is now a 2 disc set
2) Mastering was done by JJ Golden from the original cassettes that John & I put together on a dual deck in my old house in San Dimas. All the clicks, inbetween song noise & charm has been left in tact. The reference copies sound incredible in that they are not cold/antiseptic/digital elbow distanced sounding. Sound very present & in the spirit of the original tapes
3) John & I have talked for years about this set coming together, Mark of WCKR SPGT has done the layout for the disc & it is a CD only release (yeah, you can get it digitally if you are a total loser w/ no depth perception). Dig that it is on CD & not on LP as when these were released on tape years ago, each dubbed in my apartment, folks laughed at how draconian & antiquated the cassette format was. You got a fetish for a format? Stick your dick or clit in the tiny hole of a 33 and 1/3rd & text an imaginary phone that I don't have in the AM.

These tapes are gold, got me & many of you through some hard times & continue to do so. Sending my love & please forgive my endlessly hard shell.
