I need research help

April 24, 2012 11:31PM | I need research help
OK, in some point in time I knew everything there was to know about tMG. I knew names, dates, times.. I had setlists memorized. I've done a lot of drugs since my tMG fandom was at it's highest peak. Things have been forgotten, and google is a motherfucker for the really obscure stuff.
Anyhow. I'm working on a retrospective piece for Sad Young Cardinals titled The Slow and Necessary Evolution of John Darnielle. What I need to know is as much stuff about some of the members as possible. A comprehensive list of Bright Mountain Choir and Rachel Ware appearances are what I'm looking for at the exact moment. I also need dates of the early releases (as close to exact as possible). I'm trying to get as close to chronological order as possible.

Thank you!

Whoo. I used to have my chronologies down too, but it's gotten fuzzier.

Both Taboo VI and Hound Chronicles were 1992. Taboo VI was SHR27 and Hound was SHR33, but the latest release number that appears on my Shrimper Catalogue Winter 1992 is SHR26. So those were probably right after winter 1992? I think, in this case, Winter is regarded as the beginning of the year. And being that Shrimper released ~20 titles a year at this point (the beginning of its peak,) I'd guess that Taboo VI and Hound both came out in early 1992.

Petronius was also 1992, but it's trickier to use the numbers for that because Shrimper separated out the 7"s into their own category. So Petronius was SHR705, and only SHR701 is listed on my Winter 92 catalogue. That one was probably later in the year.

JD has frequently referred to Chile De Arbol as the 2nd 7" and that one came out in early 1993, I think. After that was Philyra, which is dated Winter 1993. Tim Adams' discography lists Philyra as 1994, though, so perhaps that was late 1993? And then we've got Hot Garden Stomp between those, which says it was recorded "in 1992-3." Also in 1993 was Transmissions to Horace, which says it was recorded 12/7/92 and appears on my Sonic Enemy Catalogue under "New Stuff" Winter/Spring 1993, along with A Munchies Kinda Christmas.

Then we've got 1994, which had Beautiful Rat Sunset, Taking the Dative, Yam, Why You All So Thief and Zopilote. Yam says that it's "July in California," and Beautiful Rat Sunset was recorded in Summer 1993, but I can't find any dated info on the others.

So here's what we've got:
1992
-Taboo VI*
-Hound Chronicles*
-Songs for Petronius*
1993
-Transmissions to Horace (?) [I'm leaning toward this one]
-Chile de Arbol*
-Transmissions to Horace (?)
-Hot Garden Stomp*
-Philyra* (Cusp of 94?)
1994
-Things Get Confusing
In some order:
-Beautiful Rat Sunset* (I suspect this is early b/c it was recorded Summer 93 but vinyl manufacturing takes a while)
Why You All? (I have no idea)
Luigi Falagario has the other three going Dative / Yam / Zopilote, which could be alphabetical, but it could also be accurate. He does really know his shit.

At any rate, hope this helps with the early stuff where it gets hazy. Oh also, asterisked stuff has credited appearances to the Bright Mtn Choir.

Shit, I thought Hound was '93. Thanks a lot!

I thought Taboo was 91!

Okay yeah I was wrong but I don't think Bright Mountain Choir was introduced til tHC! Petronious was more the mountain goats were rachel amy and them there was no distinction between the choir, plus did they even sing on that 7" or was it just credits in name? I always assumed it went Taboo -- Petronious -- The Hound Chronicles but I don't really have any basis or proof. Well.. I mean I always overestimate the times for pressing a 7" and underestimate pressing a tape, but Hound says at latest the recording went 'til summer '92, Petronious offers no dates.

Yeah, the line has always been that Taboo was 91 but I can't find any evidence that it actually was. So I'm guessing 92.

Also when I'm talking about the Bright Mtn. Choir, I'm talking about credits only, not if they were actually singing on the tracks.

I also might be wrong about the Petronius / Hound order, but I do believe that tape dubbing was pretty damn fast. Especially if we look at Beautiful Rat Sunset as a potential example of how long the vinyl delay is. I'm willing to bet, even, that Petronius was written & recorded before Hound, I think it just came out after.

But again, this is all conjecture. I've done some research, but I'm still essentially guessing.
April 26, 2012 11:06AM | Re: I need research help
Well I looked to make sure and Taboo says 92 on the insert (ref). But even on this site it says 91. It's confusing.

Might be best to get ahold of Tim Adams if you're really needing this info to ask a few q's. Maybe Johnp can help too?

Luigi isn't a maniac. He just gives new meaning to the word obsessed.

Did Mike Woj and Luigi trade tapes in the past?

I got a lot of my "release dates" from looking back at when I received stock at Ajax -- not a perfect method, but close enough. Anyway, my comments:

So here's what we've got:
1992
-Taboo VI* -- I first stocked this in May '92, but may have originally come out in '91. (I believe that May '92 was the first time I had dealt with Shrimper catalog)
-Hound Chronicles* -- first stocked August '92
-Songs for Petronius* -- first stocked January '93
1993
-Transmissions to Horace (?) [I'm leaning toward this one] -- first stocked July '93
-Chile de Arbol* -- I put this out, so I know the release date was 6/28/93
-Hot Garden Stomp* -- first stocked October '93
-Philyra* (Cusp of 94?) -- first stocked Feb. '94
1994
-Things Get Confusing
In some order:
-Beautiful Rat Sunset* (I suspect this is early b/c it was recorded Summer 93 but vinyl manufacturing takes a while) -- first stocked Feb. '94
Why You All? (I have no idea) -- first stocked July '94

I assume Tim just left them in when he copied/pasted shlack's post.

I'm pretty sure the release order was TVI, tHC, SfP.

The "(c)1992" on TVI looks like it's in Dennis' handwriting.

Ha ha ha. Wild Creature, you've made me laugh and you're right I'm a mountain goats maniac and it's chronic. It all started years ago when I first listened to the "Window Song" on the Abridged Perversion compilation. It forced me to order copies of The Hound Chronicle and Hot Garden Stomp. And it has obliged me to write Oska Records and get a copy of Yam, The King Of Crops and it is still going on. What was it? 1996, that it started?

all the info on my website has been collected by me through the years... reading fanzines, catalogues and the liner notes on the tapes...

www.themountaingoats.net has certainly been a great inspiration...

and the inland empire mailing list... i used to be subscribed to it but then i changed email address and i've never been able to find if it is still working or not

i'm a member of this forum and have been a member of older mountain goats forums... but i'm not an active member...

i rather spend my time listening to old shrimper tapes in my room as i work at my resurrected record label... almost halloween time records... or as i drive through the streets of my town.

i've never got a chance to see mountain goats live (i'm from italy) and that's why i started collecting live shows...

it is nice to read posts of this forum and it's great to find some friends here... let me send a big hello and thank you to rik...

This thread made me look through my old shrimper catalogs. I always love the humor. The fall '93 Shrimper catalog just says
"HOT GARDEN STOMP
Songs for grandchildren ages 9 - up"
