Magpie

why did magpie make it onto the sunset tree?
also, does it mean anything?
April 05, 2012 01:18AM | Re: Magpie
your copy of sunset tree has a song called magpie on it?

it's an old songwriting trick: when an album is getting too intense, throw in a song about a bird.
April 05, 2012 09:34AM | Re: Magpie
And I suppose I should add before this thread devolves into 100 levels of snark, I think Magpie is a great song. Love the mandolin on it.

Magpies can be very territorial and aggressive, so it's a good stand-in for the abusive father, who is a constant threat while young JD tries to mind his own business.

I'd be interested if others have any more insight here.

isn't there a line: "the magpie will have his way"?

seems a farily straighforward reference not just to the stepfather against a young JD, but against the whole household maybe?

let's get dressed up in costumes and dance by the bar.

Am I the only one who forgets this song exists at all until it comes up when I'm listening to TST? It's always a surprise. I mean, it's a good song, I just can't seem to remember it.

Not helpful, but it often comes into my head when crossing the sq. to the busstop, haiku for Magpie -

only a traitor
undresses his metaphors
as if they were whores

One for sorrow, am I ought to salute it when it comes up on shuffle?

In some cultures a single magpie is seen as a bad omen
and I think there is a legend about magpies carrying a drop of satan's blood underneath their tongues.

I only know that when I first listened to the album I had the impression that it was about his stepfather comming to visit later in life. It probably isn't, but I don't see why there is a question about it being on the album. If you can accept "Song for Dennis Brown" as fitting thematically, I don't see why "Magpie" is a stretch. This is not to say SfDB doesn't fit either. I just think it has less directly to do with John's abussive stepfather than "Magpie".

i dont care about songs fitting the theme, i just didnt think it was about anything. If i wanted to hear a song about birds, I'd watch Mr. Rogers. amirite?

SWV, your response captures the essence of what needed to be said... the proverbial picture telling a thousand words..... there ought to be no more posts in this thread after that.... uh - except this one.

To throw the thread even more off track... Did you ever see that episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry was talking to Jason Alexander about the George character and Jason was saying how he hated George because he was so obnoxious and then it got really awkward? Soooo funny!
