Am I the only person that reads these word salad spambot posts as incredibly meaningful prophetic poetry? As though the unknowing hand of ones and zeroes has grasped on something dire and beautiful and can only express its need to be known through garbled transmissions? Is anybody else cleaning their gardening tools and stocking in grains and water for the day? The Day?

As a person who writes poetry for (a very small percentage of) a living, I will cop to having stolen a spambot phrase from this board for use in the manuscript I'm currently working on

There was one about I think cowboy's horses and jewellery that I thought I'd screencap'd but can't find. Anyway, I read that'un out loud to my self 3 or four times.

I've got pages and pages of spam posts from this board saved. I was thinking of using them as lyrics so I could focus on the musical aspects of songwriting. Feel free to use whatever you like:

My only concern is that they sound poetic or interesting because they are stolen from elsewhere on the web and mashed up/embedded with links, so I feel it might be stealing someone elses' work.

This touches close to the new debate over whether or not aggregation is theft.

Kenny Goldsmith (poet/philosopher) has said that "with an unprecedented amount of available text, our problem is not needing to write more of it; instead, we must learn to negotiate the vast quantity that exists. How I make my way through this thicket of information—how I manage it, parse it, organize and distribute it—is what distinguishes my writing from yours" (Uncreative Writing). His argument is that we don't need new texts at this point, we just need to rework the ones we've got in interesting ways. So his answer to your question would be absolutely not.

I once wanted to use some spam mail ("My name is Mr. Wong, I'm from Honkong" - what a rhythm!) as lyrics for my punk band, but my band said no because a) there's no Zombies in it and b) I should go write my own lyrics. Since then, I try to rap the spams here, or meditate over them...

Re stealing: I looked up a quote once from one of these "spam poems" but couldn't find it anywhere on the internet. Maybe I'll do a longer search sometime to see if smaller phrases crop up. But if the poetry's stolen, I'm not sure where from.
ETA: it now occurs to me that since a lot of this spam seems so highly grammatically incorrect and I can't even find little quotes from the poems anywhere that these "poems" may be poetry written in another language and then put through Google translator one too many times.
Also, I am immensely curious how these spam poems get made. Like if a person makes them by hand or if he/she designed some software that picks up snippets of poetry on the web and then combines them with the products he/she is trying to sell.

The very first one in the document (belt buckle history) was lifted from another site, but I certainly didn't try all of them. I kind of assumed they were all lifted in a similar matter.

I guess I'm not so much worrying about "stealing" them to put to music (since I really wouldn't have a problem putting any interesting piece of writing into a song), but I think it weakens (just a little) the premise of a song having spam-generated lyrics if they were just taken from somewhere else. Unless I leave the advertisements in, which could be interesting.
