He wasn't always famous, remember. He's been in the game for twenty odd years now. When did you guys find out about him? Surely not '91, was it? I mean, you've all been to every concert, right? Seen every performance? Or probably just latched on when The Sunset Tree came out, right?
Yeah, Mountain Goats fans are going to populate his concerts and forum. That's the idea, duur. But don't make the assumption his success was overnight, or that he didn't have some tough crowds and gigs. Christ, get off your fucking high horses dudes. JD wasn't always an "Indie God", he may be in your eyes, sure, but he's lost band members, he's played a long time and didn't always have a cult status. He wasn't always the greatest songwriter, nor guitarist, that he has become today. He's always been brilliantly creative, and unique, original. But let's not kid ourselves. Taboo VI has Move (Chicago 196X) and Solomon Revisted on them...I'm sure those were the songs that got you into the band and man, right? His career didn't really take off until Youtube, The Sunset Tree, and consistent touring, writing, and practicing over a period of twenty years happened.
His fansite wasn't established until four years after his debut release. Four years is a long time to be recognized. It took him eleven records, recorded by himself, at home, with little money or equiptment, for him to land a "major" record deal. Most would have given up by then. I'm sure he's played in bars where there was a drunk guy or two giving him shit. Don't tell me he hasn't.
Just because he's successful now and mostly avoids such altercations because he is surrounded by such loving fans, don't think everybody always "got it", and don't let me offend your little egos by not bowing down to "THE MASTER" and not thinking he's a human, who had to grow and learn and hone his skills just like everybody else.
What's the most attractive thing about John, and his music? His lyrics? His guitar work? His vocals?
For some, maybe. But I'd say personally, it was looking criticism, fear, and self-doubt straight in the eyes and saying "Fuck you, I'm not giving up. I'm making this happen, no matter what."
Which is why I'm curious about such. And why I asked you all, the fans. Not because I hate John, or his music, or his fans. Because I wholeheartedly love everything about TMG. the fans, the music, the grand idea of it all.
John has some major balls, and we all know it. But his balls had to drop at some point, didn't they? I'm sure every musician has, at one point or another, heard the phrase "Don't quit your day job!"
