HEY, JOHN WON'T READ THIS THREAD thumbs down (forum covers project)

March 07, 2012 01:16AM | Re: HEY, JOHN WON'T READ THIS THREAD thumbs down (forum covers project)
Re: layla once again, with regard to cutting stuff at the beginning, probably the easiest way to do it is to position your playhead at wherever you want the actual "start" to be and split the tracks there (Apple + T). You're going to have to do that individually with each of your tracks. (Assuming you have multiples). Then you can just select the beginning part that you split off and delete it, and move the tracks back to the start of the project.

If you've got any further technical questions, feel free to email me at cpschlachte (hAT) gmail (DOTh) com and I will hook you up with answers

it's getting there...

i've realised that recording a guitar track and trying to lay a vocal over the top results in 2 things:
1. quite a lot of ambient noise (cheap mic into shitty laptop running Audacity and a radiator that sounds like it's bringing up last night's dinner)

2. a very self concious vocal track. give me a guitar to hide behind and i'll shout lyrics at you all day long (if you're into that, let me know... i could do with the extra cash) but without a guiitar... the lines sound forced, laughably pathetic and awful.

i think i'll go back to my one track take, maybe laying a second guitar over the top if i'm feeling flamboyant, and my heating isn't on.

let's get dressed up in costumes and dance by the bar.

Oh, man, I am so totally with you on both counts.

For (1), try Audacity's Noise Removal effect. It does a decent job of getting the worst noise out.
For (2), on a recent song I brought my computer, mic & headphones out to my car parked in the garage (which is the farthest I can get away from people, since I live in a rowhouse with a detached garage). Knowing no one could hear me helped a lot. I think the small space and upholstered interior helped some, too. Of course, I still hated the vocals even after this but that's more because I wrote them.

Betamax--if hiding behind a guitar helps you get over the singing, turn yr headphones WAY up so that you can't really hear yourself singing and then sing the overdub.

Totally agree. I can get way more into it too if I'm pounding out chords at the same time as I'm singing. With just my voice I end up focusing too much on it. But I have an equally shitty set up as you so every thing sounds even more distorted if I record all in one take.

thanks for the audacity and general advice, folks!

I didn't know audacity had a noise reduction, so that's a good thing.

@dtrom: i totally forgot to ask: do you want a shouted/sung 'HAIL SATAN' or just a spoken one, or are you not bothered? Also, would Monday be too late to send it to you?

Anything would be fine, I think. I'm not exactly sure how it'll fit it in the song yet, but I was thinking a chorus of "Hail Satan"s at the end would be nice touch. So while a variety would be interesting, if I only get a few, then shouting/singing would be better.

Please send something in! Unless you think this is a dumb idea, in which case let me know. I'll shut up.

edit: Monday is definitely not too late. I doubt I'll get everything recorded before the following weekend.

Finished mine yesterday, super proud of it.

Put this up on bandcamp when complete?

Yeah, this is a good idea. A Bandcamp page might supplant the website, honestly.

Of course, I'm happy to custom-make a site. But would people even care about it? What do you think?

I think Bandcamp is a great idea for the project, but I'd love for it all to go up together. I'd appreciate a custom site, but the work load, I'm assuming, is much more involved. Bandcamp is easy to use and set up. Either way on that is fine with me. For Bandcamp though, If it was kind of piecemealed and spread out, I think it would feel like a less cohesive and together seeming project.

That's just me, though. I like getting an album all at once.

What do you guys think?

I think bandcamp could work well if we put it all together on a single account as a single album. And Nigel, there's still plenty of customization to be done on the bandcamp page itself, if you wouldn't mind doing it. Hopefully it'd be less work than putting together an entire site. The other benefit to bandcamp is that it's a format people generally get by this point, so they'll be able to access and use it with great ease.
March 11, 2012 09:39PM | Re: HEY, JOHN WON'T READ THIS THREAD thumbs down (forum covers project)
Yeah, Bandcamp is looking like a great idea. I've already started setting up a page for this.

Something important about Bandcamp, though: they demand lossless files. This makes it especially important for people to submit lossless files if they are able! We want to minimize transcoding as much as humanly possible.

Bandcamp embeded in a crisply designed site was my idea. use their streaming to offset bandwith usage of actually uploading the whole album in multiple formats.

I hate to be the one to point this out, but you need to own the rights to whatever songs you post on Bandcamp. Unless you want to license them, that means no covers.
March 12, 2012 06:15AM | Re: HEY, JOHN WON'T READ THIS THREAD thumbs down (forum covers project)
I thought that bandcamp was the least picky/restrictive about covers. I see tMG covers up there all the time, and put one up myself. I don't even remember seeing any warnings about licensed/unlicensed material.

I'm not sure if this project would cause more of a problem since it's all covers, but I don't see it being an issue with bandcamp...

I think bandcamp is fine with covers, as long as they're free.

BC is perfectly fine with covers and the like, as long as you set them up for FREE DOWNLOAD only; NOT as a "Pay What You Want" or whatever, etc., because then that gets into the licensing problems, etc.

If we're setting this up via BC, then there will be NO problem with setting it up as strictly a free download, or as a possible donation to a charity or something. You're right about the restrictions in licensing; but that's only if you're expecting people to BUY them.

Also also: I'm glad BC demands lossless files; it makes transcoding an easy feat and also allows people to control what type of bitrate they want. Super cool.

just going to be That Guy and say that, at least for me, one of the first results in that search is the If You See Light cover by Shipwrecks (my dear dear dear friend Johnny) and you should go listen to it.

ok, back to business.
March 12, 2012 06:51PM | Re: HEY, JOHN WON'T READ THIS THREAD thumbs down (forum covers project)
the wording of the legal jargon scared me away from uploading covers onto bandcamp sites that i've done. i don't charge for any of it; it would be cool if i could upload the missing songs from what i've uploaded.. just makes me nervous when nowhere in the FAQ/info does it clearly say, "covers are ok if you're not charging for them". that ideology makes sense, but i didn't want to get any grief without knowing for sure.
