for YEARS people have been telling me to cover that song.
but when i sit down and listen to it
i cant figure out how to approach it and its really fucking with me and its looking more and more and more like its not going to happen.
But thats what i said about Going to Chino.

So I've reworked Dirty Old Town into a 3/4 sea shanty complete with accordion, but I have no good recording equipment. My plan when I jumped into doing this was to record onto an old boombox for the guitar/vocals and then overdub stuff into shitty quality laptop stuff. I intend to do the minimum amount of recording possible on my laptop, because it is tasteless and cheap and lame and shitty quality and not in a good way like an old thrift store boombox. BUT the old boombox I thought I'd be able to record on no longer records, and although I'm confident I can track a working one down at a thrift store...what if I can't? I do NOT intend to record it onto my laptop, and I have no connections for recording equipment. If I cannot find a boombox would it be to late for someone else to take my song? I really don't want to do that because A ) I want to do this B ) I've committed and I shall be ever more looked down upon and shunned in board lore as that new guy who fucked up. But if there are people who want to do this song and I cannot find a boombox or connections for some real recording gear by...let's say Monday, would anyone take my place?

You could just submit the version by The Dubliners and hope no one notices.

True story: I made Shane McGowan dinner once. Steak and mashed potatoes. Had no idea who it was, just thought he was some drunk foreigner.

Hey, just a thought. If anybody (involved in this project or not) wants to send me a recording of themselves saying "Hail Satan", I could maybe incorporate that into my song. Could be a fun thing. No promises.

Two things: one, this looks awesome and I'm really, really excited to hear the final product. Two, I wish I'd been able to submit a song, but as I'm finishing up an album and just doing a lot of shit in general, I don't think I'd have enough time to do it justice. Anyway, this should be great.

I believe it would be the rather dull "hill Satan". Though we do pronounce Satan slightly differently.

Where are we sending these when we finish up? And in what format (although, really, you'll get whatever damned version i end up with because i have no idea how to export out of garageband.)?

This being said—if you are able, please try to submit a lossless format like aiff or wav or flac! I will end up transcoding lossless files for the website, but it would be great to have lossless copies.

Layla--to export from Garageband, go to the menu at the top that says "Share" and then select the option that says "Export Song to Disk..." Don't check "Compress" and then just hit "Export" and then you should be good to send the resulting file, (can't remember if it's WAV or AIFF) to nutopia.

Fank you!! i pretty much got a mac for the express purpose of not having to spend thousands of dollars on the non-user-friendly protools (or the like) but being able to upgrade from audacity.
So here i am, now, contacting everyone i know saying "how do i cut out the bit at the beginning where i mess up and then say "balls" a hundred times?"

Fuck it, I'm gonna record this onto my laptop. I'm going for a nice and simple arrangement so that it can fit the production quality. This probably means no harmonizing (despite the hour I just spent doing three part harmonies on that first verse. I love harmonies. This hurts.)
