HEY, JOHN WON'T READ THIS THREAD thumbs down (forum covers project)

February 24, 2012 03:46AM | Re: HEY, JOHN WON'T READ THIS THREAD thumbs down (forum covers project)
everyone loves a secret.

edit: i feel i should be honest here and say that i cannot now here the word 'secret' without my mind casting back to some bootleg somewhere where John opens with:

"this is off the new album. It's called Recognition Scene. The song title, not the album...

the ablum title is a secret"

if you know the bootleg, then you'll know the playfiul way he says 'secret', and that is now in my head. forever. it makes my day to day job hard work.

i'm a spy, y'see?

let's get dressed up in costumes and dance by the bar.

All I've got to do is the vox this afternoon and find a cello.

The latter may be harder but I think it's necessary.

If you're lucky, this might happen.

Why's everyone in this thread a f***ing Mountain Goats fan?!

I link to nigel's site (uglythingsinthedarkness) in the first post of the thread. They're there.

I'm not sure the extent of the artwork that's planned, but wouldn't it be nice to have a location attached to those credited for covers? Just like: James Dough (Baltimore, MD) for example . . . I get the feeling that this forum and its members really sprawl the globe. Is this a possibility? Or even a remotely interesting or plausible idea? thumbs down? thumbs up?

Can't speak for plausibility, but it sounds like a neat idea.

Especially given the geographic nature of many tMG songs. This would have been an excellent idea for "If We Ever Get There At All".

Yes. This is a good idea and we will do it.

As far as other questions to ask participants for the site: what do you think they should they be? Last year we asked What did you learn while recording this song?, which I think we will probably ask again. But is there anything else you'd like to see on the site?

How about any personal relationship you feel to the song/album?
February 29, 2012 06:56PM | Re: HEY, JOHN WON'T READ THIS THREAD thumbs down (forum covers project)
So I've reworked Dirty Old Town into a 3/4 sea shanty complete with accordion, but I have no good recording equipment. My plan when I jumped into doing this was to record onto an old boombox for the guitar/vocals and then overdub stuff into shitty quality laptop stuff. I intend to do the minimum amount of recording possible on my laptop, because it is tasteless and cheap and lame and shitty quality and not in a good way like an old thrift store boombox. BUT the old boombox I thought I'd be able to record on no longer records, and although I'm confident I can track a working one down at a thrift store...what if I can't? I do NOT intend to record it onto my laptop, and I have no connections for recording equipment. If I cannot find a boombox would it be to late for someone else to take my song? I really don't want to do that because A ) I want to do this B ) I've committed and I shall be ever more looked down upon and shunned in board lore as that new guy who fucked up. But if there are people who want to do this song and I cannot find a boombox or connections for some real recording gear by...let's say Monday, would anyone take my place?

well, not to be a total butt, but when i listen to my song (as i have, repeatedly, for a week straight) i cannot come up with ANY way to approach it. If you decide you dont want yours, i sorta wanna take it. In hopes that i'll be able to figure out what to do with IT better than i can with mine. but then that leaves yet another song unmanned.
sighhh.

it seems like you've got your mind set on not recording into the computer, but that's what i do for everything. i have a cheap microphone plugged into a mic (XLR? is that the right abbreviation?) to USB cord that i got on ebay for < $10. i'm not winning any production awards, but it does the job.

don't overthink it - just work with what you've got or what you can get together. if you really want to give up the ghost, i've got other people that had posed interest in the project that i had to turn away, but you seemed very excited about participating and it would be a shame to see the work you've done thus far go to waste.

This can't be true! I looked at the spreadsheet of song assignments, and I was in a tizzy when I saw what your song was. I hope you end up keeping it, because it's one of my favorites and so are you and the two would go great together.
