Managed to send an e-mail! As mentioned in the mail, would like either a random AHWT song (they're pretty much all great), or "Crows" if there are too many people keen on AHWT songs.

Evil, the possibility of a collab might still be on.

It's something i'd be interested in, but i'd like to see what song i get first. I have a few solo ideas floating around that i might wish to exploit first, before setting it up for a cross-europe collab.

Well, the idea was that everyone would collaborate, and be given a random partner. Creativity and frustration ensues! But if you're up for it, sure.

Why's everyone in this thread a f***ing Mountain Goats fan?!

So how are doing this thing? Do we have a deadline, file format concerns, etc.? I'm probably gonna sheepishly admit I'm gonna need a deadline so I feel pressured to woodshed my tune.

I am sure we will set a deadline once everyone actually knows what they're doing! Don't worry.

If at all possible, submit a lossless file. This isn't some rinky-dink operation! Somebody (most likely myself) will be encoding all the finished files and packaging them for web distribution.

do I have to hit you over the head with it?

Nigel, I honestly thought that we should transcode our recording to 32 kbps (mono, of course, you creeps) and just record feedback squalls and you reciting the lyrics, that way it would sound like jellyfish making love (AS JD ORIGINALLY INTENDED).

Damn, guess I didn't email in time. That's okay though, my production quality would be, well, AHWT level.

It's from the AHWT b-sides John destroyed after the Gothenburg leak.
February 20, 2012 04:35PM | Re: HEY, JOHN WON'T READ THIS THREAD thumbs down (forum covers project)
hey guys,

sorry for the couple days of silence, i've gotten more requests for participation than available slots and i've been mulling over what to do about them. would everyone be agreeable to also maybe adding the Devil In The Shortwave EP to the mix? I don't know if it would make the idea behind the project too convoluted, but it too was released in '02. It would give room for everyone who has requested a part in the project a slot, plus three additional places - it seems like there are still people finding out about it who want to take part.

i'd like to hear what everyone else's thoughts are, or if anyone has any other ideas, i'd like to hear them!

as far as the details about the project, i would like to give a rough deadline of about a month or so (once we iron out exactly what we are doing, haha). past experience has shown that it's difficult to adhere to a concrete deadline, but i don't want to make it completely deadline-less. as far as file format, what we have done in the past is basically left it up to the artist, as not everyone is familiar with lossless, or format conversion, or is unfamiliar how to transmit a larger file etc etc, but we try and encourage higher quality wherever possible

thanks

the more the merrier, frankly - more people involved will mean more people (should) end up donating to FS and that, really, is the main point. thumbs down

oops, missed this a whole lot, emailed just to be sure. would be great to get in on one of these again as being a part of HWANTMG was one of the coolest things ever. hope theres any tracks left.
February 20, 2012 10:50PM | Re: HEY, JOHN WON'T READ THIS THREAD thumbs down (forum covers project)
I have emailed. I asked for commandant. Also are we gonna try to stay with the original instrumentation or can I take some liberties with it ( I want to use accordion). Are y'all going to be some weird sort of offended that I didn't play it on guitar?
February 20, 2012 11:04PM | Re: HEY, JOHN WON'T READ THIS THREAD thumbs down (forum covers project)
i'm tired of trying to find my posts to edit, so i'll just post updates as new posts:

i continued getting e-mails, so we're going to tack DITS at the end as well. if anyone has any ideas for artwork, please let me know - given that we've now worked the AHWT outtakes and DITS into the project, it would be really cool to see something that could work off of the content of the songs individually and as a whole, or something concentrating on the celebration of the 10 year (!!!!) anniversary of these releases.

as i was typing this, i got enough submissions to fill up the rest of the remaining tracks. we're going to push forward now, i'm going to assign people songs and e-mail them now.

the participants: allegra, dtrom4, applesauce, shlack, betamax, Zopilote Steel, fivekidsdown429, nils., ReferenceToAMountainGoatsSong, EvilEivind, LaylaDarling, Snowybear23, SaveMeASeat, Redlandsman87, simonfox, VagabondKing, justin23000, Mr Glass, StatusFrustratio, myopic mirror & nigel, Colin Feely, and yours truly.

if you don't see an e-mail from me by tomorrow morning, check your junk mail/spam, and if you still don't have one, e-mail me.

thanks! so excited!

This is so great. My heart feels so warm thinking about being able to participate in this again. I am so excited to hear the final results, and again, THANK YOU SO MUCH to all involved in making this work.

It's been fairly common to do stuff in different styles and you are also encouraged to do so! I do vaguely recall a story about JD making a comment to someone re: a fan-compilation track (from the mid/late 90s, though... Postcard to the Mountain Goats? or the other one?) about how he was grateful to hear a good version that wasn't guitar. That being said, we've had some really (even surprisingly) nice acoustic guitar submissions in the past (eg. Fart).

Fart is a legend in my book. I'm sure in many other books too . . . actually 'The legend of the Fart' is the name of his chapter . . .

whew, that was a lot of emailin'. i just wanna reiterate right here about how cool it is that we can get together and do this kinda thing, and i'm really happy to see some familiar names on this one.

i'm a little worried about keeping it cohesive with the addition of DITS, so again, if you guys have any good ideas for artwork, please let me know. i kinda made an off-the-cuff decision to add it without really talking it over with SaveMeASeat - who really originated the project idea - so i'm a little nervous (and i hope when he reads all this that he doesn't send me angry e-mails), but i couldn't turn people away and this was the best way, IMO, to facilitate everyone

so that's that! you should have your song assigned - again, let's plan on a rough deadline of about a month from now. if you're done sooner, that's great, if you want to spend the time fine-tuning, that's cool too. we will post details about where to send your submission in the next week or so.

again, seriously, thanks!

If DITS isn't long enough remember Poltergeist is an outtake from that 12"
I think it should have a different album cover from the AHWT one.

and yeah there's also the Sub Pop 7"

PS "There are no windows or doors and the walls are on fire" would make a lovely title for the comp/tribute.

1) I am very excited about this.
2) Both albums have white covers, so there's that.
3) I suggest we not name it "All Hail the Shortwave"

I'm too busy musically to take on my own song, but if anyone wants synth, organ, or piano on their track I'd be more than happy to provide. The piano and organ would technically be voices on an electronic keyboard, but the synth is the real gen-you-wine deal.

EDIT: Melodica can be provided, as well.

@SlowWest- I was thinking of ad-hoc'ing the percussion and organ on my song, but I think it would come off a lot better with, say, a musician involved. Email me about it, if you're interested.
