HEY, JOHN WON'T READ THIS THREAD thumbs down (forum covers project)

February 15, 2012 06:22PM | HEY, JOHN WON'T READ THIS THREAD thumbs down (forum covers project)
Yep, it's time for another one. In the last few years we've been developing what I'd dare to say is a pretty good history of forum-based albums. I've been part of the last two, Hi, We're Not the Mountain Goats and If We Never Get There at All.... So this time around I decided to help spearhead the effort to get this one going - along with (so far) nutopia back up in the saddle and Nigel doing his web techno-magic once again.

For a clear example of what will be going on, check the past threads of these projects

Hi, We're Not the Mountain Goats
If We Don't Get There at All...

This will be a forum covers album, like those two and the previous No Safety. But this time around? This album is all about All Hail West Texas. Just in time for the tenth anniversary of that album (Tallahassee has reached the same point but already has its own dedication), a high point in tMG's catalogue where the last bastion of Straight Oughta Boombox-style made an amazing final stand. Those who sign up will be assigned a song from that album OR era (if there are more people than there were songs on AHWT) to record on their own. Did you always want to hear how "Riches and Wonders" would sound if it was on Life of the World to Come? Well if that's your song, make it happen!

Here's how:
-email nutopia1213 at gmail dot com with your real name, board name, and name you want credited for your song on the album.

If you'd prefer a certain song you can include it, but if we get over a certain number of people it's more likely we'll be doing a random assignment since people will request the same song(s)

-Post here saying you've done so, and that will periodically be updated here in the thread by someone.

THEN
-The songs will be collected in album order and hosted on another great site done by nigel (see: uglythingsinthedarkness.com). It will be available to download along with a (suggested) donation made to Farm Sanctuary

-Without an upcoming tour to there's not much on which to base a giving out of physical copies. If there's a large demand for it (which apparently was not super present with the last one) then something can possibly be figured out, but the focus will mainly be online for now.

Now HAVE AT IT AND LET'S GET THIS GOING!

We are the ones who don't slow down at all...

haha, i was wondering why i was getting so much e-mail..

big ups on the thread title, that's funny

right, so, as was said, e-mail me please. let me know if you have a specific song request; right now we are going to try and accommodate requests - anyone who doesn't care what they get assigned will probably get put in a queue and assigned a song once the "i wanna play this" subsides. being that i'm gonna be more or less moderating requests, to be fair, i'm going to step aside and choose from the non-chosen when we're nearing selection completion.
February 15, 2012 09:39PM | Re: HEY, JOHN WON'T READ THIS THREAD thumbs down (forum covers project)
Song selection is full (AHWT w/ outtakes & DITS) and everyone has been e-mailed their assigned song. If you requested participation and haven't received any correspondence from me, shoot me an e-mail.

I have sent an email. If I am allowed to participate it will be my first forum comp. If I get the song I requested and have time to do the recording as I plan it will be so much fun.

Just emailed, but I'll post here as well, as the email stated, a mirroring of sorts...

I was going to request See America Right (who wasn't? haha) but now that it's taken, I'll take any song. I'm not picky...just a quick question though. Does the cover have to be a strict reproduction of the original, i.e., following chord patterns/rhythm to the absolute note and second? Or can we put our own unique "twist" on the covered song, per say, switch it up, make it our own? I can play a decent majority of John's material as it was written...but I'd prefer if I'm covering a song to put a different perspective on it, a different approach to whatever song I am granted with covering. Depends on the song, really. I might play exactly as John does, or I may completely flip whatever I'm given until it's unrecognizable.

Also, I don't have a modern, state of the art, bells and whistles recording studio. To be honest, if I recorded such, it's production would be rather lo-fi, ala early TMG. On a cell phone, or a webcam, or a cassette tape. Not that I'm against the idea of studio quality recordings...it's just that, as of now, such is a bit out of my means!
February 16, 2012 10:22AM | Re: HEY, JOHN WON'T READ THIS THREAD thumbs down (forum covers project)
Listen to the previous collections, people do what they have at home and play the song however they like in terms of putting their own twist on it. Otherwise what's the point?

I recommend Audacity as it's free and pretty easy to use and comes up with a good transfer that I'm sure would beat a cell phone (and I don't know how the others would end up as an mp3 which is what we would need ultimately).

Cool. I don't visit the forum very often or am very active in the community, so I've never really given those records a spin or kept up to date with the projects/happenings. newb, n00b, newfag, whatever your preferred vernacular. But I'm downloading now, can't wait to hear and can't wait to hopefully participate!

Already ahead of you, have Audacity installed, and am pretty familiar with it. We'll just see what happens.

I'm gonna do a AHWTx song and force it on the comp because nobody is celebrating its tenth birthday. >: (

Wow, you know that didn't even occur to me - and I love AHWT to death it just never clicks in my memory for some reason that the two came out the same year.

Would have been a more effective way of distancing from the TTT project too...heh.

I'd be behind switching it up even at this point.

Or if there's overwhelming demand for this project, we could do both albums.

Edit: As stated, this covers Tallahasee-era songs too, which, depending on your definition, could include AHWT.

All right - excellent point about All Hail West Texas. I'm thinking we should do both; generally there's enough people participating to tackle that many songs.

So, let's do this: anyone who has e-mailed me already and would like to change their song selection, please RE-email me (sorry) and let me know. I'm going to edit the song list above to reflect what I have now, and will update it as we go.

Thanks!

edit: With the number of people, there were four songs left once people were randomly assigned songs, meaning with the addition of All Hail West Texas songs, there's 18 slots. Even with the project just recently being started, that seems like a lot of people. The alternative would be for everyone participating to select one song from each album, then I'd only need the four more people to sign up. I don't want to stop anyone from participating who wants to, but I also don't want to have two half-full albums.. food for thought - I'm open to hear everyone's opinion on this.

edit 2: we've decided to just do AHWT.

I'm good for one each, and have a thought in mind for AHWT myself. But I don't wanna be greedy... I'm just thinking that due to relevant lyrical content my spankin' new cornet would be a sweet replacement for the keys in "Blues in Dallas", and it'd give me a new song I could perform by fastening a tambourine to a clapper board on the floor and since the instrumental never interferes with the vocals I could perform it all in one take ah crap you guys quit giving me ideas...
