So far we have heard

In Memory of Satan
Transcendental Youth
Diaz Brothers
White Cedar

Are those the new songs they have broken out on this tour or am I missing any? Also what do folks think. Diaz brothers is an especially catchy tune, the others haven't grown on me yet.

Well, there is also Harlem Roulette, though that's only been played once (I think) and it wasn't technically part of this tour.

Was that the one from the City Winery? The one he played there was very good but I was too excited to remember the name.

i am avoiding all of these until i can hear them live.

let's get dressed up in costumes and dance by the bar.

I've really enjoyed what I've heard.. I love the piano and I love the premise (living with mental illness). I mean, I never really *fully* appreciate a tMG song until I am sitting in my dark bedroom with my headphones on listening intently.. (although the first time I heard 'You Were Cool' live it stuck with me immediately), but right now I think these new songs are really something special.
February 08, 2012 03:15PM | Re: New Songs
Of the three I heard live, Diaz Brothers is fucking killer and is my current favorite tMG song, Memory of Satan I can tell is good, but I think I'll appreciate it more recorded than live, and I didn't care too much for Florida Plates, but that may change.

In Memory of Satan and Diaz Brothers are cool, blood-pumpin' shit

I think I'll need to hear Transcendental Youth recorded first to grasp the lyrical components more, because I couldn't hear it too well live

White Cedar I've...kind of forgotten about, but I would want to hear it again because you don't always get songs on the first hear

I haven't heard White Cedar, Harlem Roulette, or Night Light. Night Light sounds exciting.

I really love all four of the new songs I've heard, but Diaz Brothers is my favorite. It's still stuck in my head.

Mercy for the Diaz Brothers!
February 09, 2012 12:55AM | Re: New Songs
I was certain JD said "Heart Cedar" was the name of that song... New album sounds excellent so far, "Heart Cedar" having given me chills when it was played live. That chorus, man...
February 09, 2012 09:29AM | Re: New Songs
I keep reading "White Cedar" as "White Cheddar."

That is all.

White cheddar popcorn.

Yes.

I've only heard the four songs mentioned by the OP. The only one that hasn't really grabbed me is In Memory of Satan. The other three are all really compelling! White Cedar has a real Ezekiel 7 vibe that I really like. And the swinginess of Transcendental Youth is really great. Unique.

do I have to hit you over the head with it?

am i alone in thinking none of these will be on the next record, except as maybe bonus tracks in australia and japan?

I had this thought, too; but "Diaz Bros" is definitely going to be on the record. Same with "White Cedar", for sure. JD said he had "12 or 13 songs" already finished for the record in that recent interview, and he also said he always writes a song or two in the studio. That puts us at about 14-15 songs, assuming that the ones he's been playing live lately are included on the record. So it's definitely a possibility, in my eyes, however, the fact that they've been constantly and repeatedly on this tour makes me think otherwise.

One small word about these shows. For years bands have been pretty judicious about playing unreleased new material, because much of it becomes available online immediately, even when the new songs are still in fairly raw form. We, too, have gotten into the bad habit of holding new stuff back. We are done with that whole philosophy, though. I miss playing stuff that's unreleased & unrecorded, stuff that still stings fresh. So we got together and decided to tour the new songs before we even record them. I don't guess that we'll be touring all ten of the new songs I've written for the next album (eleven if you count one that's presently being herded back and forth between its cell & the chopping block), but be advised that if you're the sort of person who wants as many surprises as possible when you hear a new album, you should tread lightly around recordings of these shows, because we're not going to be holding the best ones back for the album release like people tend to do now.

I adore White Cedar. I heard it when he played at the Invisible Children benefit in LA. Can anyone tell me who the Diaz brothers are? Is it just characters or a reference to something?
I love the premise of this album too. I've had psychological problems my entire life, so I can really identify with some of the characters.

The Diaz brothers are mentioned in a single line of the movie Scarface.

And in classic JD fashion, he wrote a whole song about the lives and pathos of these poor, dead brothers.
March 01, 2012 01:13AM | Re: New Songs
Oh, that makes sense. I've actually never seen that movie, but you really feel for the characters in the song. I always wonder about those minor characters that people forget. Of course JD is the one who thinks to write about them.
March 01, 2012 03:50AM | Re: New Songs
Before doing research or hearing the song I thought it was about the twins from Breaking Bad.

I didn't remember them actually having names, but according to wiki they do and it's not diaz.
