Matthew 25:21

January 23, 2012 04:15PM | Matthew 25:21
More fan worship.

I’m a 2D artist with varied influences of which John Darnielle features prominently. But who of those who have heard his work aren’t influenced, right? This post isn’t about that anyway.

This past summer I had the very bizarre experience of being dead for somewhere between 10 and 15 minutes, and unconscious for around 24 hours, after experiencing a cardiac arrest. During the entire duration of the latter my loved ones operated under the knowledge that I would not regain consciousness.

Now, being an artist I tend to be a bit ravenous in my consumption of quality examples of creative expression. That being the case, I tend to become somewhat desensitized over time to emotional content while unintentionally evaluating the structure of the thing. “Matthew 25:21” hit me something like a hammer, and came to be the much needed therapy in accepting the temporary grief my family suffered, and my fear of the possibility of their loss through of my condition.

matthew 25:21 is just amazing, the simplicity and power in the language is an enormous accomplishment just from a literary perspective, not to mention as a piece of music. its certainly one i find myself turning to a lot when i need that kind of emotional jolt to knock me out of my jadedness. the only time ive seen them live my friend got the setlist and I saw that where they played 'you were cool' it said "you were cool or matthew 25:21". I remember thinking, "damn, i kinda wish they had played that, its one of my favorite songs ever, but honestly I'm also kinda glad they didnt cause that much emotion would have been hard to handle in a public setting like a concert, and you were cool was definitely a more fun choice." i totally wouldve teared up to matthew 25:21

Welcome to the forums! I am glad that you survived, I can't imagine going through something like that.

Matthew 25:21 is a masterpiece. It's just so sad and beautiful.
