Kickstarter Description
William Schaff is an artist living in Warren, RI. He's responsible for many a piece of fine art, including album covers from some of the top indie bands you know and love.

I am a fella who runs a small recording label and record store in Savannah, GA., Graveface Records.

For 5 years I have been trying to find an extra $15,000 to put out a high quality, fine art book that collects the artwork William Schaff has done for bands and musicians over the years. Every time it looks like I have the money, something comes up. Thanks to the wonders of you and Kickstarter, this might actually happen now. The idea is simple; make a beautiful 11x11 hardcover art book of at least 60 pages featuring Schaff's music related artwork from childhood until now.

An introduction by John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats and intros to different sections by such notables as Will Sheff of Okkervil River and Darren Jackson of Kid Dakota help describe how these images came into existence. But wait, music fans...there's more! The icing on the cake is the 10" that Jason Molina [Songs: Ohia, Magnolia Electric Co.] recorded specifically for this project a few years back. These songs have never been released on anything else! They're incredible, and it's been quite difficult not letting anyone hear them for so long.

Does weird mean awesome now?

Honestly I don't know. I feel conflicted because it looks like it was a lot of fun to make but the fact that you don't see anyone's face makes me feel like they don't feel confident enough in the material to actually stand by it and say "Look I made this awesome thing and now you can have some of it." That's just me though.

I feel like if they didn't want to show their faces there could have been some more creative ways to promote this. A south park style animation using the characters from the albums or a montage set to some Karate Kid music would have sold me.

I've loved the Okkervil River artwork and they're actually one of the bands that pushed me into picking up the vinyl because of the larger artwork. That being said, I'm not sure I'm at a place where I can afford to drop $65 on a coffee table book.

having just started a micro book press and priced out what it costs for photo books, the cost of over US$14,000 for a 100 page book, even of photos on high quality glass paper with top quality hardcover binding, seems unrealistically high to me.

Looks like a very cool project. I've been meaning to donate.

Also, the video isn't weird. That's just how shit goes down in Savannah.

A few tidbits on this project--

re: the price, it's a book and a 10", plus other goodies so I think that factors in a few things. Also 10% of the money goes to Jason Molina (of the 10"'s medical bills)

I'm definitely on board for it as soon as I gather the cashes.

And finally-- this thread got linked in on the Graveface mailing list: "If you'd like to get a copy of the book or just check out our criticized Kickstarter vid, here's a link to the Kickstarter."

In which "criticized" was a link pointing here. Haha!

Ha! Awesome. I'm happy someone noticed that link.

I really appreciate you all spreading the word and chatting about this project. I think you'll enjoy John Darnielle's intro along with everything else included.

When all is said and done the book will cost about 18k but I didn't feel comfortable asking for that much. If you know a printer (including the vinyl cost) that can do all of those things for less please feel free to share your contacts. That would make me very very happy indeed.

Take care everyone! It's a weird world we live in,

Hey Mr. Graveface-- it's kind of off topic but since you're around, whatever happened to the 7" subscription series you were planning for 2012? Is that still going to be a thing?

and on another Graveface note, will there ever be more triple vinyl low level owl collections in stock?

Yo! That is definitely still happening for sure. I've got the contributions from Mike Watt, Lady Lazarus, Shearwater, Serengeti/Tobacco & Eternal in my hands but am waiting on a time-frame on the others before I put them up for sale. I've bought into a few 7" series in my life and have been screwed out of some music (and $$) in all of them. So I'd rather only sell the ones I have than promise releases that might never happen.

Might end up being a summer thang.

Definitely. I'm currently suing my former distributor for about a zillion reasons, one of which being they've held my stock hostage since mid-2010. So they have probably 30-40 copies of the last LLO pressing sitting in their basement that I'll get back next year.

I will not do another pressing though because I licensed that from D.E. and their requirements for licensing are just plain nutty.

Peace!

i think william schaff has been avoiding photos of himself for years, and this aesthetic has no bearing on this project. i could be wrong in that there's widely available press photos of him somewhere, but from back when he had an old umass website to the flickr page now (besides the occasional self portrait), his face is usually shielded.

Rock on, Graveface! Bought the "Blue Water White Death" album last year and loved it (and all the goodies). I'm definitely on board with this art book.

Ahh that's my bad then, I only know him by the couple album covers. Thanks for cluing me in. smiling smiley
