going to detroit (or what we have of it)

While I know the fragment you're talking about I'm guessing you know we do actually have the whole song.

I'll come up with a list later, but what's the story behind Steel Smoked Fish? Never heard of it.

I only have four. I've definitely heard more than four unrealeased songs but I wouldn't consider them "favorites."

1.You Were Cool
2.You’re in Maya
3.From TG&Y
4.Bride

I'm sure this has already been said before and I know that JD hates when people say this but it is an absolute crime that You Were Cool didn't make it onto AED.

Steel Smoked Fish is a song that got played at one Portland show, on the Life of the World to Come tour. The opening couplet was (I'm paraphrasing) "Steel smoked fish, (something something) air / underneath the Burnside Bridge, before they shot movies there." The chorus declared "God bless allllll petty thieves!" There were also lines about going to Plaid Pantry and hiring prostitutes. It was a Portland song.

I wonder if Steel Smoked Fish and Any Available Surface were West Texas Orphans (WTO was new material, right?). Steel Smoked Fish is less likely, given the regional thing, but they were from the same time period. And I remember John grinning before he played it and saying "You have no IDEA how long I've been waiting to share this song with you." So...

City > its State (If I'm not being too presumptuous.)

no, West Texas Orphans were outtakes from All Hail West Texas, hence the title. apparently there were 15 or so that didn't make the album.

From the very limited unreleased stuff I've heard I have to go with these.

1 Song for my Stepfather
2 Ethiopians
3 You were cool
4 Sign of the Crow

I completely understand why he doesn't play Song for my Stepfather more. The first time I heard it was in Nashville and I was just dumbstruck at how beautiful yet soul crushing it was.
April 08, 2012 12:29AM | Re: Top 5 unreleased songs, go!
Going to Dade County
Waco
From TG&Y
Going to Bridlington
Tulsa Imperative

If covers were eligible, i'd insert Pirates (So Long Lonely Avenue)
If we were doing top 5 favorite unreleased songs to actually see live, i'd fit in Terror Song

You were Cool is a great song and is the type of song (due to its simplicity) that would probably sound better live anyways, with all of JD's personality touches added (plus, we have a great recording of it on youtube from lolla.. what more could we ask for than that?). That song and Sign of the Crow are too new to me (less than 2 years old) for me to give them consideration (too fresh). Doll Song would be in my top 10; that is probably the #1 most unlikely -- other than the destroyed tracks -- goats song to ever be performed live by John again, considering he already hated it over 15 years ago haha

Song for my Stepfather is such a brutal song i can't believe it was written, but i'm thankful it was. John is at his best on that topic in my opinion, and that's as candid as he's ever gotten on it (that've i've heard)

April 14, 2012 12:04AM | Re: Top 5 unreleased songs, go!
5. Calcutta
4. Tulsa Imperative
3. You're in Maya
2. Going to Bridlington
1. From TG&Y
April 14, 2012 02:14PM | Re: Top 5 unreleased songs, go!
I actually, to be truthful, haven't heard a lot of these.

"From TG&Y" and "You're in Maya" are probably in my top five tMG songs period though, so...

5. The Big Unit
4. Rockin' Rockin' Pet Store
3. Ethiopians
2. From TG&Y*
1. Carmen Cicero

*So apparently there's a studio version of this one? I've only heard live renditions of it Youtube before, but I saw a tab for it that made reference to a studio version. I'm just curious is all, I'm not asking for someone to point me in the right direction if that's not kosher.

But if it is then that's totally what I'm doing.

Hey in/out!
Here's the info (& binding disclaimer) on From TG & Y from at the time: [www.mountain-goats.com] ...if there's not a working link on that thread/around, I'll dig it out my EHD when I come home next weekend. Next weekend when my cousin leaves for New York. *GoogleMaps* ~3000 miles away.

I hadn't known about this studio version either, but I was able to find it here.
April 21, 2012 08:47PM | Re: Top 5 unreleased songs, go!
Thank you so very much! I think I actually like the live version more, but this is still pretty neat to have.

Edit: Nope, I was wrong. This rules.

You're in Maya
My Favorite Things
You Were Cool
From TG & Y
Going to Bridlington

This would make the list, but I don't know if it's unreleased or what. Does anybody know the song 'Soft Targets'?

As far as covers go, one cover that I particularly love the Mountain Goats version of is 'When I Get Home'

Edit for: Also, has no one else mentioned My Favorite Things? God damn it, I love that song!

I felt the same way. Didn't get excited at first by the studio version because it didn't seem as good as the live versions I'd heard. It definitely grows on you though.
