Why besides Sir Arne's Treasure? It was played live there which legitimates it for discussion.
May 10, 2011 03:16PM | Re: Top 5 unreleased songs, go!
I don't want to take away from the Milk Song discussion, but I really like their cover of Boys are Back in Town with the R Kelly remix to ignition ending. In addition to everything that's been named before, obviously.

i suppose, but (i cannot remember the source, i'll look for it) john was not into the bootleg of sir arne's treasure. if this is the only recording we have of it, it is not legitimate.

i don't remember hearing this about JD. I'd be interested in the source.

I completely disagree. No more argument from me.

okay, if i ever did find JD's official word on it, i cannot find it in the 20 minutes between now and that post. i did however find this:

"Except that it's 2011, which means that of course someone bootlegged the entire concert and posted it online. Here it is via the Indie Rock Snob, caveat pending--this may well not be the state Darnielle would prefer anybody to hear it in."

italics added for emphasis.

so if john said, no please don't download this bootleg, you would do it anyway?

if john says no then that makes it illegitimate. which is not cool as far as creator consent and rights go.

JD has said on this forum on a few occasions that anything live is open game. i know of only one exception to this, in which JD expressly named a song he did not want traded, or even played, or even tab'd, and milk song was not it. plus, he subsequently played that song live, again, which confused me. still, i don't trade it, mention it on lists, etc. then again, i don't really love the song anyways, so it's kind of easy for me. but there is no other song i know of where trading live versions is a no-no. i'm happy to be corrected on the point, I just don't know of one.

the two cents of me.

and that makes sense. but it seems like the nature of this performance makes it weird territory. to each their own. if they wanna take the risk, that's cool. i'll sleep, obviously, as it's only music.

Protopostmodern I think you're confusing two issues. JD has said many times he doesn't like live recordings. That's why he would never release a live album. He feels a live recording can never replicate the live experience. In the case of Sir Arne that is doubly true since it was meant to accompany the film. At the same time he's also made it clear he knows his fans like his live recordings and he has no problem with that. The Sir Arne show was played live and recordings are available. JD has said that legitimizes a show for trading purposes and certainly discussion. We're certainly entitled to our own opinions. Ok, now I'm done. It's all good.

Calcutta

What bootlegs are these from? They aren't on any of the one's I have or have seen, and themountaingoats.net doesn't say.

Thanks!

Oops. I meant 02-75. I'm not sure why I was thinking 15-2 since I've never heard it. Maybe because I have always wanted to hear it.

Calcutta I have on a recording. I'm not certain which one, but as soon as I get home and confirm which one, I'll repost a link.

NYU show from March 1997. This is the first part of the show as it was too long to upload as one. Calcutta is the second song of the set after what has to be one of the earliest live versions of Baboon to start off the set.

Part two of the show is here.

Thank you very much! The song (and setlist, for that matter) is great! And so is 02-75, I felt weird not including on my list.

No love for "Counting Song For Bitter Children"? I really like that song, but unfortunately didn't have the room to squeeze it in.

it was pretty awesome. Of course it would seem less awesome if I could listen to it every day. But it was awesome.

going to buffalo
etiquette song
going to detroit (or what we have of it)
brandy lets go
