Mountain Goats tab request thread!

January 30, 2011 07:15AM | Re: Mountain Goats tab request thread!
I would like to request "Dogs Of Clinic 17", please. Preferably without any capo'ing.

Why's everyone in this thread a f***ing Mountain Goats fan?!

I guess I did promise I'd do that one a while ago, didn't I? I'll get on that.
January 30, 2011 01:57PM | Re: Mountain Goats tab request thread!
awesome, are you the dude that runs mountaingoat.net?
January 30, 2011 02:01PM | Re: Mountain Goats tab request thread!
Nope, that would be Jon Nall. I'm just the dude who went to music school and likes transcribing songs.

Here's "Dogs of Clinic 17": [www.themountaingoats.net]

I know the tab can look a little overwhelming at first glance, but it seemed to make the most sense to list all the electric riffs first. Let me know if this is confusing and I'll try to clarify.

Does anyone think they can figure out the tabs to Running Away with What Freud Said? I think it's in the key of E but I'm not entirely sure.

Waco. I've got the majority of it down, but there's parts I'm having trouble with.

Added to the wiki, just for you (My formatting isn't optimal because I'm retarded, so hopefully Nall or someone else more computer savvy can fix it).

In addition, I also added (how I play) John's version of Doctor Wu. His cover of this song is absolutely amazing and I get chills even when I sing it.

New member here! Been listening for a year and a half I suppose.

Figured I'd make an account and post a tab I can't find anywhere but I figured out with the help of a friend.

Chinese House Flowers -
Capo 1 (Chords are relative to the capo)
E 022100
G 355433
F7 xx3545
E7 xx2434
E7(2) 022130
E6 022120
Verse: E G F7 E7
Chorus: A B E7(2) E6 E7(2) E6
I don't feel like going through the words to match it up with them right now. But I stand behind every single one of those chords being right as long as you use the capo on the first fret.

And while I'm thinking about it I worked on Some Other Way from Undercard as well because the tab on the wiki is dead wrong.

Some Other Way-
Intro: C F C G x2
Verse: C G Am F F#m x2
Chorus1: C G Em F G# C G Em Dm Em Dm Em C(or F) Am G
Chorus2: C G Em F G# C G (Em Dm Em Dm)x2 Em C(or F) Am G
Ending part before the guitar solo: C F C F
The guitar solo is literally the same progression as the verse is. Some of those chords I'm unsure about but I'm willing to say 90% of them are correct. Just the second chord in the chorus walk down slightly eludes me. I hear a C and F in it though.

Two songs down. Many, many, many more to go.

love that tab of chinese house flowers. thanks so much. FFG was my first tMG album. and that song was my favourite for a long time. I think I've had the most fun playing FFG songs. there's some great tabs of New Britain, Maize Stalk Drinking Blood and Ontario too. Can someone do the mountain goats version of Abide With Me plz?

That's a great first post (and thanks for tackling an untabbed song!), but I hope you won't be offended if I make a few corrections to Chinese House Flowers.

In the verses, the first chord is B5(add 11) (x24400), and the second is D/A (x00232). You can also hear a bass note in those F7 and E7 chords, so they should be F7/C and E7/B. (Respectively, x3x545 and x2x434.)

If you listen in the chorus, you can hear the high E and B strings ringing through every chord, with no thirds, which makes the chorus this:
Asus2 B5(add11) E7(no 3) E6(no 3)

Asus2: x02200
B5(add 11): x24400
E7(no 3): 07x700
E6(no 3): 07x600

Great work on this, though. I've been trying to figure that one out myself on and off for a while, and your post helped me put together the pieces I was missing (for some reason I had trouble hearing the voicing of those 7th chords).

This is gonna sound sad, but I only started heavily listening to pre-AHWT stuff about a couple weeks ago after I'd seen them in Nashville, Atlanta and Asheville. I wanted to find a bunch of the older tunes he'd played and dug this one out because I want to cover Minnesota at one of my first solo shows.

Chinese House Flowers stuck with me when I first listened to it though. I couldn't stop thinking about it for two days and I finally broke down and then started working on it. I had to ask a friend for help on it because he's got perfect pitch and can distinguish between the notes better than I can.

Man, those 7th chords eluded me the longest. I had so many variations of what it could've been in my head for a while and then after I resolved to the correct E7 area I realized what the F was in the verse. I face palmed myself so hard after I figured that out.

Then it was relatively simple to go after the chorus.

I'll be honest and say I really don't hear the D/A in the verse when I play it against the recording but it sounds good nonetheless. Thanks for the notes.

The fact that John's guitar is a bit out of tune on the record doesn't help, but if you listen closely, you can hear the open E and B strings from the first chord resolve up to F# and D respectively. And the bass note is very clearly descending from B to A. It's pretty easy to hear the chord at the very end of the song, when he's strumming much more slowly (around 2:43-2:45). You can also hear the high strings changing in the beginning of the song, before he starts singing.

Yeah I can hear it now after going by those top two strings. Thanks for that. I'll start breaking it down note by note from now on when I transcribe. It'll be training anyway.

Right on. I studied atonal ear training in college, and one skill we worked on was the ability to listen for individual notes within a chord, and to hear where other notes in the chord were in relation. If you want to seriously get into transcription, being able to do that will serve you well. It comes in handy sometimes with the early tMG songs, where it's not always immediately apparent how the guitar is tuned or what the individual notes are. Similarly useful is listening for how specific notes in a chord resolve to the notes of the following chord. Listening for open strings within the chords is helpful too - that can clue you in on unusual chord voicings, or if there was a capo involved, or an alternate tuning. (These are all more common in older tMG songs, up through The Coroner's Gambit.)

tl;dr - I liked ear training.

Anyone have the chords for Catherine Antrim's Kid?
It's one of my favorite tMG songs right now.

Still looking for Catherine Antrim's Kid chords!
Here are the chords for Rotten Stinking Mouthpiece since I didn't see them elsewhere on the boards and it's pretty simple.

intro: D G

D F#m Bm G
lob some spit at the window

                        D
watch it drop down the pane

                    F#m Bm G
it's only the guilty who concern themselves

                      Asus A
with clearing their names

D F#m Bm G
you bring tidings of hope, false tidings

                 D
when you come here

                               F#m Bm G
there's two friends who did me wrong that you're protecting

            Asus A
it's so clear

Em A
and when you speak it's those two who speak through you

                 Bm
who'll speak for me

                  G A D
the burning and the electricity

sun goes down San Francisco
friends are hard to find
chew them up just as quick as I can find them
try to clear my mind

remember hours at the table
gauze flight light easing through
if there's one thing that I'm not going to do tonight
it's die for you

'cause when you speak it's those two who speak through you
who'll speak for me
the burning and the electricity
