Mountain Goats tab request thread!

August 26, 2008 01:32AM | Re: Mountain Goats tab request thread!
Much better, thanks. Where is that tab housed, by the way? I looked through your tMG page but didn't see Jack & Faye.

Hey Red Dwarf
you gave me the idea to revise and improve the whole Jack+Faye tabs, now it's done:
Raid on Entebbe
Adair
An inscription at Salonae
There will always be an Ireland

I've looked around and I feel kind of lame for requesting a tab (even if it is a request thread) but if anybody has got Carmen Cicero in them I would be super appreciative.

it was actually 2 7"s btw and the mastering date was 5/1, I cancelled it this a.m.
This is why you should be nice to everyone.

I don't even know when this was requested, but I transcribed Teenage World and added it to the wiki today.

Anyone know what chords JD uses for live versions of "How to Embrace A Swamp Creature"? I like that progression of the the variations of "D" climbing up the neck, as opposed to sticking to the 2nd fret, as is on the album version.

I've got you, GFRider - putting it on the wiki in a few minutes.

Edit: It's up. Cool tuning on this one.

lincolnic, you are the man! thank you! that was fast, i was surprised to see a response, let alone a complete tab.

I'm at work now, but I will try and learn this as soon as I get home. Thanx man...
February 24, 2009 03:37PM | Re: Mountain Goats tab request thread!
No problem. It's a pretty straightforward song once you get into the right tuning. I recommend playing the first Am(maj7) chord with your ring and middle fingers, and put your pinky down to make it Am. That way you can keep the same fingering when you go up to the C (just add your index finger on the 5th string). Have fun playing!
February 24, 2009 11:14PM | Re: Mountain Goats tab request thread!
lincolnic, that tab is amazingly accurate, thank you so much. how did you figure out that tuning?! the tip about the ring and middle fingers was very helpful too. im srsly impressed, i wish I could figure out tabs like that.

I have been playing that song all night, I love it.

not to ask too much, but if possible... "Scotch Grove" on "The Coroner's Gambit" is another one that I really like and I can not find (or figure out)... I tried to figure it out, but im not that talented yet. if you (or someone else) could help me with that one to I would really appreciate it.

Thanks again for higher, nice work.

how did you figure out that tuning?!

Mostly it's a matter of first figuring out what key the song's in, and then listening for where the open strings are. If, like this song, the recording's in Ab minor but you can hear an open Am voicing, then you know it's tuned down a half step. I heard the open B string droning in all those chords, so what's where that came from. I did a transcription of "Original Air-Blue Gown" a while ago that came about the same way.

Anyway, glad to help out.

I'll take a look at "Scotch Grove" tomorrow night if I'm not working too late. Otherwise, Thursday.

I wish I knew music like this. I mean, I understand most (some) of the theory, I just don't have the ear to tell what key something is in, or to pick out notes or chords. I'm super happy with myself when I can figure out song that goes E-A-B or something. I'm jealous, and grateful.

It's all just a matter of practice. I'll bet you can hear things you don't think you can hear. Try it sometime!

same here... I just listen and try chords until somthing sounds right... but a song like Heights with funky tuning and odd chords i would never have a chance at transcribing.

Thanks again lincolnic.

"Scotch Grove" was tough to figure out, again mostly due to tuning issues. I'll put it up as soon as I get it typed out.

Edit: Posted! Don't forget to retune your guitar when you're done playing this one.

Edit 2: I saw someone posted "Down Here" to the requests section of the Wiki...will take care of that one after lunch.

lincolnic, thanks again man. I will try and learn this one as soon as I can...

Did you learn how to do this on your own? take lessons? read a book???

I really appreciate it. Thanks.
February 28, 2009 03:15AM | Re: Mountain Goats tab request thread!
Well, I've been playing guitar for 9+ years, and I studied ear training for three years when I was in music school (including atonal stuff). But really, I just like transcribing stuff, and it's the same as anything else: the more you do it, the better you get at it. Start with simple stuff, and as your ears improve you'll begin to hear relationships between the notes more, and little by little it gets easier. You just have to be willing to try, and to be wrong a lot until you get it right. Learning to play other people's songs is good practice too, because you learn some common (or uncommon) chord progressions. I didn't learn to do this overnight...I started trying to figure out and learn songs as soon as I started playing guitar. It's an ongoing process.

If transcribing music is something you're seriously interested in, I really recommend taking some ear training classes (and I don't mean the "learn perfect pitch!" bullshit ads you see in the back of guitar magazines). Learn solfege, learn to hear the relationships between intervals. Learn some basic theory and to hear which scale tones are present in which chords. Practice transcribing all kinds of things, not just guitar music. Learn to play the Doogie Houser theme song. Anything is good practice if you'll let it be. And don't be afraid to get it completely wrong. There's only 12 notes in the Western scale, you're bound to hit the right one eventually.

Lincolnic, you're the man. What a wonderful piece of advice.
