Mountain Goats tab request thread!

December 05, 2007 05:00PM | Re: Mountain Goats tab request thread!
heres one I just did for fun:

Korean Bird Paintings (New Asian Cinema EP)

Intro: C F

C
yesterday I put in a good 5 hours

talking to the statues
F
chased your memory all around the room
C
didn't manage to catch you
but I cleaned out the savings account
blew everything I had on flowers
F
and I covered up the furniture in carnations
C
rolled around for hours
G---------------------------------F
there are those of you, who got the wrong idea right now
C
but man you should of seen me when I got through
G-------------------------F
indistinguishable from a fourth century Briton
C--------------G
waiting on the couch for you
C
I put all the extras on the credit card
bubbles of the galaxy and mylar balloons
F
everything we'd saved up in one room at the same time
C
cartoon stars, crescent moons
thank you notes, get well cards
condolences, congratulations
F
bright colors, hues and signals
C
reminders and reverberations

G-F-C

Oh! Could someone please please please figure out the chords to "Thought About You a Little / Birthday Cake Song"? Would love to be able to play that for my birthday.
December 06, 2007 12:07PM | Re: Mountain Goats tab request thread!
one thing to note is that I do a lot of note-dropping so for example the "F" in "Korean Bird Paintings" isn't a standard or barred F but I think only frets on the B string @ 1 and the G @ 3

I could be wrong about the exact positions but I know it's not a standard F.

Yeah, that makes accurate tabbing much harder.
But sounds so good!
December 06, 2007 01:33PM | Re: Mountain Goats tab request thread!
Hm, I may have figured it out myself. Sounds maybe a bit off, but seems to work. Basically:

A - E - D - A

And variations on those.

yeah it's a 1/2 step up from what you've got if I remember right.

Bb F Eb Bb
then the other variation is
Bb F Eb F

and damn John must do some weird note dropping because the 2nd chord of I Corinthians 13: 8-10 does not seem like a regular Em to me. But maybe I'm just not tuned right or something.

Hrm, those are the exact same chords for an original piece I've been making the past couple of days, even before I discovered this song (which I think I did today or yesterday). Kind of annoying. Makes it feel less original, and I'll be worried about "crossing over" into the other song. The chords are not quite in the same order though, and the melody is different (though inferior), so should maybe be okay. Loads of songs share chords.

Optionally: OMG!! John stole my chords!!

Optionally: Thank you, howardfinkel483!

yeah I couldn't really decide if it was an F or a Dm, and now that I am playing around with it again the "F" sounds more correct played like this:

e|1
B|3
G|2
D|3
A|-
E|-

hey y'all.

go check out the wiki... I added a "tab requests" section. I went through the last 2 pages of this thread and added them as requests.

might work out better if y'all put the request on the page as opposed to here... but i dunno.

it's worth a shot anyway.

it was actually 2 7"s btw and the mastering date was 5/1, I cancelled it this a.m.
This is why you should be nice to everyone.

Against pollution is not in standard tuning.Anyone who plays guitar would know this by the sound of the recording.
December 11, 2007 08:33AM | Re: Mountain Goats tab request thread!
Don't be so presumptuous, Dilaudid. Some of us who play the guitar suck, and don't know any better. (Nor do some of us care, as long as the tab gets us close enough to play it in our respective rooms. But I am all for getting the right version up on the wiki, too.) As a better guitarist than I (apparently), do you know the correct tuning?

I've been playing for 8 years and didn't realize it was an alternate tuning.
But... maybe I'm just terrible.
December 22, 2007 08:20AM | "One Fine Day"?
Okay, another tab request from me: "One Fine Day", as performed by tMG.

I hear the bridge a little different, but I may be wrong:

D7 ("Though I know you're the kind of girl..."winking smiley
Em ("Who only wants to mess around..."winking smiley
Am ("I'll keep waiting and someday darling"winking smiley
D ("You'll come to me when you want to settle down"winking smiley

Right, that sounds better. I kinda BSed the bridge.

(Upon second listen there may be a few more chord changes in the bridge that I missed, but I think it hits the main ones)

Has the Insurance Fraud song been done yet? I'd really like to know how to play that.

'There's a lot of ways to make money in this world
But I can't recommend Insurance Fraud.'

Genius.
December 27, 2007 09:32AM | Re: Mountain Goats tab request thread!
On the version of 'Shower' I have it sounds like there are 4 chord changes. I'm a total novice but the tab site says it goes Em-C-Am twice over, but there seems to be another change in there to my ears, it seems like a pattern of 8 rather than a pattern of 6.. am I crazy? Should I just play one for longer? Or what?
December 27, 2007 10:24AM | Re: Mountain Goats tab request thread!
Hmmm... I play it Em-Am-B...

But still only with 3, not 4? I'm just going off the wiki, I'm still quite deaf to chords atm.

richardbob- I believe you're right with the 4 chord version of Shower, but right now, I can't remember exactly how it's played.

But, once again, I have to say, never take a tab/chord site as the final authority. People never seem to take into account things like chord variations and minor/major changes. Also, people tend to figure out one riff, and post that, never bothing to check the rest of the song to see if the riff changes at points. With tMG songs especially, it often does change. Lastly, people tend to make up the parts of the songs that they aren't able to fully figure out, and that's really not helpful at all. Then you have a bunch of people out there playing songs with wrong chord changes, but since they got it from a tab site, they say, "Oh, that's just how I learned to play it", rather than learning it correctly.
I know I've ranted this before, but it's really frustrating. Best thing to do is always play the chords against a recorded version of the song. If you have some sort of tab, along with a recorded version of the song in question, you can usually find your way to the correct chords (even the amateurs can do this, use the tab as a map and then experiment from there, figuring things out by ear can take a lot of trial and error, but in the end you'll be better for it).

Yeah I just played the one that's online for ease, but it'd be nice to find out a closer match sometime.
