Good luck to you sir. In the best possible way, I hope it costs you a fortune.

i hope it does, too, and I hope i get some good competition. As an incentive, all potential bidders should know that, if i win it, i shall destroy it without listening to it or copying it.

i've only got about a grand i could spare for this. am i correct in assuming that this damn well better draw way more than that, and therefore i shouldn't bother bidding?
March 15, 2011 06:42PM | Re: Eugenes Sue
i love the fact that in the image he's posted, it's in front of a book titled "Blood Curdling Tales of Horro and the Macabre"

Nice.

fucking hell, a grand! Wow. That's impressive and generous in equal measure. Consider my cap doffed in your direction.

last time, an entire tour went for a grand, so you might get this for a grand. then again, i may outbid you at a grand, you never know. my plan is to bid up to a sum matching that which i have already donated through red cross, and no more. but i'm not saying how much ive donated through the red cross. could be more than a grand. could be less.

Let's form a coalition to defeat Wild Creature and his goal of destroying the song.

Obviously since there is only a single tape forming a "coalition" has some problems, but that could be resolved with some simple rules:
1. The largest donor gets the tape. No exceptions.
2. Everyone else, granted that they donate a minimum percentage of what the head donor donated, gets a copy of the song. That percentage could be 20%, it could be 5%, I don't really know.

If this a bad idea let it sink, but I say all is fair in love and charity auctions.

Edit: There's another problem that it would be hard to be sure that all donors stay true to their commitment. Potentially one person could be left with a pledge that she is unable to pay. Those auctioneers can be terrifying.

Edit 2: Under these rules it's possible that the largest donor could raise his donation to a threshold where the smaller donors decide to drop out, thus lowering the total sum. Sort of an interesting dynamic.

This is a smart & practical idea, but maybe it defeats the romantic spirit of the tape being lost into the hands of a greedy collector? I don't know. I'm with you if you want to organize a collective purchase of this tape.

You don't need to spend $100 for that book, because it's called "The Best of H. P. Lovecraft: Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre," and it's available from Amazon or you can buy it from an indie bookseller. That spine in the photo suggests to me with 99% certainty that it would even have the exact same cover.

I'm assuming Eugene Sue is a reference to this guy. Although I know nothing about him, I'm guessing that's where the "French continental theorists" bit comes in.
March 15, 2011 09:36PM | Re: Eugene Sue
I think whoever wins should destroy it, but only after performing and posting a cover of the song, with all the music and words changed.
March 15, 2011 10:49PM | Re: Eugene Sue
I love this! So brutal. WC, there's no way you could destroy that, unless (I guess) you were feeling really, REALLY disenchanted with how things are round here at the moment.

I don't know what this is, but if it's a rare or unique tMG item, anyone who would destroy it is absolutely not a fan in any way.

Mercy for the Diaz Brothers!
March 16, 2011 12:06AM | Re: Eugene Sue
Yeah, destroying it would be pretty harsh, especially since you would have won it over hundreds of other fans. You may as well just donate how much you would have paid for it, so Japan will get that money and the money someone else pays for the tape. No offense to your beliefs, but that feels a bit more reliable.
March 16, 2011 12:22AM | Re: Eugene Sue
I'm pretty sure WC was only saying that to encourage someone to outbid him.

I would not be the one to organize it as I would necessarily be one of the smaller donors in the scheme (I'm a poor college student).

Personally, while I would love to donate as much as possible to Japan, $60 is about as much as I can justify right now. That's about 20% of $300. With the a main donation of $300 and 10 supporting donations of 20% we would be up to $900. And that's assuming that nobody goes over their participation threshold.

Perhaps the contribution requirements should be placed at something else. Potentially the project could just result in some guy purchasing a tape for well under market value and then making a quick buck on eBay. Of course that wouldn't matter at all as far as the charitable aspect goes, but it might create some bitterness. The best case scenario (imo) would be for no such profiteering to take place and for the song to remain a neat little closed thing to the group that took part in this.
