Mountain Goats cover GG Allin

Last night on the Best Show on WFMU it was announced that the Mountain Goats are going to be part of a 7" called Rated GG that will feature covers of cleaned up versions of GG Allin songs. Also on the 7" are Ben Gibbard, Ted Leo and Fucked Up. The only way to get the 7" is to pledge to support WFMU during their fundraising marathon which begins next week. The 7" is part of the Best Show's pledge premium. I thought people on the forum would be interested in knowing and/or complaining about this. Anyway, info on pledging is here: [www.wfmu.org]

I can't seem to find it listed among the pledges (or the DJ premiums)... do you have any idea of the minimum pledge level for one of the seven-inches?

For a pledge of $75 you get one DJ premium (and a WFMU sticker and t-shirt). To get the 7", you have to select "The Best Show On WFMU with Tom Scharpling Presents Don't Stop Me Now 2011 Best Show Fantasy Pack" as your premium. This also comes with a Best Show shirt and poster.

Scary that if you go through all those steps it still doesn't say anything about the 7"...very interested in getting this...but worried to click the last button. The one that makes my money leave (and yes, I know it's for a good cause, and yes, I support them...but I don't want to spend $75 and not get the only thing I'd actually want in return for my pledge).

If, on the page with the list of all the premiums, you click on the Best Show premium, it says this:

"A T-shirt! A poster! And a vinyl 7" with exclusive tracks by big acts recorded just for this premium! Our best yet!"

That is the 7" in question.

whew. I'll be ordering this. It sounds pretty amazing and hearing Gibbard's voice (which I like less and less each year) doing Allin should at least be good for a chuckle.

I'm definitely not going to be able to order one, but I hope someone posts the songs online.

I've actually been meaning to look into G.G. Allin. I've read claims from music experts that he might actually be the single most incompetent musical "artist" of all-time, so my morbid curiosity requires me to check some of it out. I'll get around to watching Hated one of these days.

Ah, music experts. Even when they're talking about the WORST artists, they always forget about early black metal. Venom could make a more half-assed-sounding record than GG Allin in their sleep.

Those comps were soooooooooooooooo bad. I was something of a completist of one or two of the bands that did time on those things, and not even in light of that would I pick up those fucking things.

I bought one of them after hearing Throwdown's cover of Baby Got Back when I was 15 or so. I don't think I've ever regretted a music purchase more than that, and I liked some pretty embarrassing music when I was 15.

I would expect it to take a few months. It sounds like many of the various pieces of the premium have not been completely put together yet. But Tom has said it will go out a lot faster than last year's premium (which admittedly has not been sent out yet (but only because it contains a complicated DVD that they just finished putting together)). The year before last, I got the premium, which featured a CD of various artists covering Paul McCartney's RAM, in July. So, don't get anxious if it doesn't show up in your mailbox in the next couple weeks.
