The second one should be "Going to Finish These Covers!"

1. i'm late, but almost done. have been attempting to communicate with nutopia for two weeks but have received no response. i suggest people not start covering other people's assigned songs based on this experience.

2. i don't like the name going to zoop. mainly bc farm sanctuary <> zoop (the money is going to farm sanctuary, not zoop), but also because not everyone's going (or has gone) to zoop. finally, because zoop has passed away and that makes me sad.

i'm not involved in this (as I have no musical talent at all) but how about Going to Watkins Glen?

hey,

going to finalize what i've received so far and figure out what to do about the missing tracks in the next couple days. i like, and completely am open to, splitting it and getting one out now with the people who have finished, but i have a feeling that some of the people who haven't finished might never finish. i'll tally up what we've got so far and post shortly.

thanks!

I like "Going to Watkins Glen". It'll have meaning to us, but Watkins Glen is an obscure place, so it sounds like a real "Going to..." song, like Kirby-Sigston or Port Washington.

Speaking of Kirby Sigston, i was riding down the motorway at the weekend (the A19 in North Yorkshire for those who know) and i drove past a sign for Kirby Sigston... when i realised where i'd seen that name before i nearly slammed my bike into the car in front!

Is that the Kirby Sigston to which John refers?

I do hope so.

Short answer: yes.

Longer answer: Yes! As far as I know, JD has never been to Kirby Sigston. Or at least, he hadn't at the time he wrote that song. But he got a postcard from there back in the day from the enigma that is Rik Albatros, and he liked the name enough to write a song about it.

That has made my day. I'm stopping off there next time i ride past, for sure.

Thanks!

I like this! Or maybe "If I Never Show". Perhaps a bit melancholy though.

Ah! Or how about "1967 Colt .45" and have the artwork be of said gun? I think blacklines could do a great job at that, if he was keen on contributing. But maybe the organizers already have art guys standing by.

Also, what's this Watkins Glen everyone's on about?

Watkin's Glen is where the NY farm sanctuary farm is based. The proceeds from the CDs will be given to Farm Sanctuary at Zoop.

The first one was called "No Safety" so let's go for not another Going to Georgia reference.

Ah, I see! That makes sense, thank you. I keep thinking of the bluegrass band Hayman, Watkins, Trout & Lee whenever I see it.

I like the Shadow Song title too.
March 03, 2011 09:18PM | Re: HEY JOHN, STILL DON'T READ THIS smiling smiley - HWNtMG album!
all right.

sorry for the disappearing act. here's the breakdown:

there are sixteen tracks that i have not received yet out of 45. the tracks i have come to about 71 minutes. i really don't want to try and do them in separate volumes because that would leave one nearly full cd and one nearly empty cd. i've sent out some emails to people who said they were still working and probably couldn't get it done by the deadline to try and prompt more submissions. there are undoubtedly some people who will not get it done in time; as we are trying to get them ready for handouts on the upcoming tour dates.

so we are left with two choices here: we can still split them into two separate volumes and release the second one when everyone is complete, or we can have some people take the abandoned songs and do them. i would love for every song to be individually done and have there be no doubling up as per artists, but i don't foresee that as being 100% possible. this project belongs to all of us, so i want everyone's input.

releasing the second volume when everyone else is complete would mean that some people who have submitted their songs already would have to wait to have their song on the second volume. there's no real great way to split the songs between two separate releases without this being the case. the only incentive i can offer for having your song released on the second volume at a later date is that if you're unhappy with it, you can toy with it a little more and make some changes. however, i don't want that to become a free-for-all where people say "yeah let me just make this change and this change here, i'll have it in a couple of days" and then end up waiting on a previously submitted track which would subsequently hold up progress.

i don't really know how to pose this situation democratically without it being a post or email flood that would add another tallying chore to the equation.. i know there were people who offered to take doubles and also people who just wanted to get everyone on board ASAP with no duplicates. i guess if i can get 7-8 people to agree to letting their song wait until the second volume, then we can go that route. otherwise, we're going to have to double up.

if i can get volunteers to have their song held til the second disc, then i will try my hardest to get the stragglers onboard. if we end up going with people doubling up, i would ask that the people doing that add something to their second song, via extra people or extra instruments, and go under a separate artist name. that way, it brings at least a little bit more to the compilation rather than the same person/people doing another song in the same method/tone.

feelings on these options? post or e-mail me. the tour starts on the 24th, but we need time to get everything together, so it is basically crunch time.

thanks again!

1) I like the Shadow Song references for the title (as well as Watkins Glen); they both hint at the "going to" theme without hitting it directly, and also reflect the second-rate/not-living-up-to-its-full-potential--ness nature of a fan-made album.
2) I'm cool with my song being held back for volume 2 if it comes to that - I'd have the option to add to my song, but if not, you've already got my submission.
3) If it comes down to having people double up, I'd be glad to work with someone on another track.

And nutopia, et al., thanks for steering this ship. I know it's a lot of work.
