HEY JOHN, STILL DON'T READ THIS smiling smiley - HWNtMG album!

November 24, 2010 05:24PM | Re: HEY JOHN, STILL DON'T READ THIS smiling smiley - HWNtMG album!
That's how it was for at least one dude on the first tmg comp I know of.

Plus if it weren't for things like that y'all would never have heard my awesome rendition of Washing My Face.

I'm pretty excited, and i'm pretty jealous of slowwestvulture's song. i would have loved that one.

so what's the deadline? New year, maybe?

It's a really good thing I decided to double check the video. I misheard the song I was given. That would've been awkward.

Haha, I am really jealous of bluelineswinger's song!

And I'm hoping the deadline is atlest a week after New Years. That's when I'll be visiting the band to do this. With the original assignment date being much later I thought It'd be perfect.

I could go with that as well. I'll be back at my folks' house over christmas so i'll have a big ol' room to practise in.

we're all pretty excited about getting this together, but i'm not personally in a rush to get things done immediately. we're all of varying musical talents, and i know a lot of you out there are trying to get other people in their performance, and i know coordinating schedules over a holiday season will be a nightmare.

take your time, get it done, and mail it to me when you're ready. the only deadline is that we're trying to get it done before the next tMG tour - that's when we were able to get the most copies of the last comp out to people, by literally handing them to them in person.

there have been subtle notes about a potential spring tour, so we're looking to have them done by then. i don't want to put anything in stone, and i don't want to say 'OMG YEAH SPRING TOUR TOTALLY HAPPENING' or anything, but it's a good deadline.

on a tangent, what i'd like to mention right here is the fact that i started going to tMG shows wayyyy late, my first show was tMG/Kaki King at webster hall. i've got a lot of them under my belt since then, and i am consequently floored at the amount of touring jd has done in that time period. prior to that point, from what i read, there was not a ton of touring going on. so i just wanted to, (ironically, considering what today is) mention that i'm really thankful that i've gotten to see a ridiculous amount of jd solo/full band tMG shows since i waltzed onto the scene as a total newb. there have been a lot of bands and songwriters who have changed my life drastically, but i think i'm finally old enough to definitively say that there probably is no one who will usurp john darnielle as my favorite songwriter; and he's probably one of my favorite people in general. i'm used to having the artists i love either ignored completely or bastardized and having them turned into either an idol or a pawn for people to talk trash on for selling out.

so thank you, john, for doing what you do. there's a million things that i could say, and want to, and (weirdly) actually have gotten the chance to, but the only thing i will say is what i've already said.

Nutopia, my problem is even worse than yours... I haven't been to ANY tmg shows yet. My first one is hopefully this summer, when John'll be playing Plan-It X Fest in Indiana along with like 5 other my other favorite bands!

Also, I wanted to say that I'm so amazed and excited that I got the song I did... I have a LOT to live up to though!

Tell me about it! My first show was this summer's Sasquatch!, and since then I've seen John play all of three times (once with Franklin) - granted, this has involved a lot of driving/even flying, but still, it's unbelievable that I've had those opportunities.

way to break up those old shows...

And out your song selection even if we wanted it to be a surprise.

I wish I got a song I didn't know beforehand, you're lucky and you're ruining it bwm.

After much looking I still need my song, thus could anyone please point me in the direction of a show where John played Going to Some Damned English City? Thanks

IIRC all I recall hearing it on was a radio interview session. I'll see if I can find it later, and yes it will be the WHOLE thing! Let's not start posting just one song now, we're all fans here people (noone's going to be mad to get a whole new gig), full shows or bust!

You're right! I shouldn't have split up Going to San Diego. To rectify my mistake, here's the rest of that KSPC, 1992 set. It's woefully incomplete, but this is the canonical version floating around. It's a fabulous bunch of songs.

1. Rockin' Rockin' Pet Store
2. Let the Dogs Come Out & Chilean Fire Barrel Song
3. Going to San Diego
4. The Car Song
5. The Doll Song

Haha! What would JD think of this? On one hand, you're keeping all we have of that show intact. On the other hand, this set has The Doll Song in it.

Shh. We all love The Doll Song.

Still looking for a show with "Going to Some Damned English City"

It was suggested so someone has to have it, nobody I've talked to so far seems to be able to find it though, if you can post a link I'd be eternally in your debt.

i do have Going to Some Damned English City floating around on its own, but not in the context of the (Radio?) Show it was played in..

edit: this may be where that came from [sites.google.com]

One more request for my song, if anyone has it. Should I spoil it and save people having to look it up?

Definitely one of my personal favourites.
