The question is: François or Francis?

The guy's name is spelled François, but Wckr Spgt stylized it as Francis.

All the covers here are really good! smiling smiley I love singing Mountain Goats songs but I can't play guitar... sad smiley Does anybody know any song that I could cover using only singing and very basic violin (only started lessons last year)?

Hmm, not sure how basic it is but there's a cover of Going to Bristol (found here) on which Owen Pallet plays the violin while John sings. It's very good, and it's a possibility...

I wanna say Up The Wolves, but I feel like that one would be too tough. I wish I knew violin.

Anyway, I made a set on Soundcloud devoted to just my Mountain Goats covers, because I do so many. Although I only have four up right now because I can't find the files for others. I just recorded Idylls Of The King and Fall Of The Star High School Running Back today!
[soundcloud.com]
I mess up a few times, and even though my cover of Up The Wolves has the best sound quality (besides the annoying echo on the vocals that the engineer added because he didn't listen to what I wanted), I could do it SO much better now... but let me know what you guys think! smiling smiley

This makes for a tough act to follow on the latest forum project (will be doing a collab with another member on this particular one).

Yeah, i was hoping for that tune myself as i was gonna get a collab with some flute on there. Alas, no, and the song i have seems like a 1-player game. We'll see...

I'd give both of these a try except that I've been Googling for a while and can't find music anywhere. Thanks anyway though, they were good suggestions, I'd love to do Up the Wolves.

Hello friends, I'm new here (first post) but I saw this thread and the nice responses so I felt the need to contribute what I could.

I spent the last hour or so recording these three songs:
Thank You, Mario...
How To Embrace A Swamp Creature
Minnesota

All of them were made in the past hour using only my shitty laptop's "internal microphone," to which I have failed to actually locate. This resulted in me playing my guitar at the screen, yelling ambiguously toward it and hoping it didn't sound too terrible. It did, so I apologize for the shitty quality (of both the recording and the musicianship). I picked the first two songs based on crowd reaction from when I've played them live, and Minnesota because someone in this thread mentioned they'd like to hear a cover of it. Not sure if someone's already fulfilled that particular request, but here it is anyway. On the off-chance any of you like this, I'd be happy to put some more up in the future.

I dig these, majorly. Great job!
You mentioned you play live, do you have any stuff of your own? My interest is piqued.

Thank you, my friend. I do have some songs of my own, most of which I am currently producing via a more aural-friendly process with a good friend of mine who is about to ship off into the Navy in a few weeks. This was the result of a lengthy evening with a bottle of whiskey and Moon Colony Bloodbath that inspired us to put together some of our songs in a similar format (one of mine, one of his, etc.) before he left. I actually just finished a song called "River of Onions" this afternoon about my ex, which I might put up on Soundcloud as one of these single-track/take efforts if there's some interest. It's a bit scary, though, since whenever someone writes music it tends to lean toward the sum of their influences sound-wise with a bit of personal flair and the line between "loving tribute to" and "blatant ripoff of" is one that I'm treading lightly upon as to not offend anyone.

Edit: Also, it was just pointed out to me that the last line I sing (and have been singing for a while) at the end of Minnesota isn't actually in the song and I can't find any record of John saying it live on any bootlegs. This leads me to believe I just made it up? How did this happen, anyone know? D:

The guitar tab is on mountaingoats.net if that helps - maybe you can find the same notes on the violin or something? It seems that Owen doesn't play a hige amount different to the guitar, especially on the intro, but then i'm not violinist so what do i know, eh?

Showed it to my sister who knows a bit more about violin than me, she said she wouldn't know how to find the notes on violin. I'll figure something out anyway, I might end up just singing, or enlisting one of my guitar-playing friends (the disadvantage of that being that they haven't heard of The Mountain Goats). Again, thanks for your help. smiling smiley

If I am able to perform a song reasonably well by next year I just might sing it at our school's Christmas talent-show-type-thing, if only to make people hear of the Mountain Goats. XD By that time next year I'll only have a few months left in school anyway so it won't matter if I look stupid. grinning smiley

Then allow me to carry on the non-mountain goats covering with Adultery!

That's some damn fine uke-ing (god that looks ugly. Sorry. Spent ages choosing between 'uking' or 'uke-ing', and they're both pretty terrible). And a thematic picture in the background to boot; that is a river, right? Also that's pretty phenomenal for a nominally 'just figured out' how to play attempt. I like how your voice gruffs up near the end too.

Gruffs up. The Gruffs Up. Band name? Definitely not. It's way past my bedtime. I'm twenty. Gonna stop now.

Jon, are you sure you're not 80?
actually, i'm too drunk to figure out the timestamp and what it means about when you're going to bed. So, i'll give you the benefit of the doubt on this one.

This sounds so good.
Fuck. You're good, man.

also LHTB, you're wonderful. Who doesnt love this song, and you've done it wonderfully!
Wish i came round here more often.
