The Hefner Brain Lives?

I've had the idea of trying to put together some sort of covers / tribute album to Hefner, my favourite defunct British urban folk band, if not my favourite band period. But I'm not sure how big the overlap is between tMG and Hefner fans, and not sure if I'd find people on these forums (or elsewhere) to fill a whole album's worth of songs.

But I just realized that, like tMG's Tallahasse and All Hail West Texas albums, Hefner's EP The Hefner Brain has its tenth anniversary this year! This five-track release from 2002 was the last installment of original songs we got from the band (not counting the Catfight! compilation from 2006), and served as their swan song. And a measely five-song tribute should be possible to pull together, right? But if there are suddenly more than five people who want to contribute we could join forces and collaborate, forming a small army of temporary super bands.

You can read about the EP here, and you can hear the EP here (from track 20 to track 24).

So, anyone keen on giving this a go?

Well... they're good. And John Peel seemed to really like them. And frontman Darren Hayman was a big fan of the Mountain Goats at the time (as is briefly mentioned here and here).

Also, any more takers? Guessing we'll wait until two out of the three other forum compilations are done before getting things properly sorted. Like deciding who's doing which song, the compilation title, and the submission deadline.

betamax: Great! Guess we just need two more now (but more could be good too). And Hefner is definitely worth digging into. The Fidelity Wars seems to be the album people like the most, but they're all great. My only worry is that these re-releases with outtakes and such might overwhelm new listeners, or give a poorer representation of the band.

I'd be in for this.

I'm a big Darren Hayman fan, and i love that whole scene that's evolving at the minute with the likes of Darren, Allo Darlin (or just elizabeth morris at times). Wave Pictures, etc. that seems to just leak collaborations for fun (have you seen the one with all the covers of Springsteen songs?, or the WIAIWYA project?)

I've not dug too deep into Hefner, though, as i'm quite a recent convert to Darren Hayman.

I'll do some research.

Super! Welcome aboard, etc. Yes, Hefner is great. Each of their four albums sound pretty distinct, and their Dead Media / Hefner Brain era is pretty much my favourite one (even if their deliberate mucking about with retro electronica lead to their demise).

Darren Hayman, Antony Harding, and Jack Hayter are still all making music on their own, but Darren Hayman is by far the most prolific. He released three albums and one EP last year, not counting singles and compilation appearances. He recently released the budget album The Shit Piano, a done-in-a-day version of last year's The Ship's Piano album.
