Just a bit of banter before he told everyone to stop recording for Up the Wolves, sadly, that's not worth uploading. Felt a bit bad recording anything after that cause I was like Right There...and the confiscation of that person's phone, which was hilarious.

And re: quality, thanks, it's just an ipod touch but it takes surprisingly good video/sound even in concert-type settings.

I took my 21 year old son to the London gig this year and we had a great time hanging out together.
My daughter currently lives in Australia, so I'm looking forward to visiting during the next Australian tour so she and i can take in some shows together.
Great show... Actually flew down from the DC area to see my first solo show, and it was impossible-to-describably good. Took my 18 year old son with me... a nice family outing :) Most of the comments above caught the high points of the show... I absolutely loved the setlist - great songs from Tallahassee and Sunset Tree, Grendel's Mother, Song for my Stepfather. I always love getting to the shows early and meeting the similarly obsessed fans - spoke with the forum's Alpha Puppington for a while. Did the whole trip in 24 hours - in and out... and came away with a pic of me and JD, so I'm a happy fan.

christ this was great.

my friends and i drove ~2 hours from orlando for this and apparently john green the rad author guy told john d that we were going to be there because before Song for My Stepfather he started talking about how some fans of John G were there and then about his books and their themes and being true to yourself and unashamed and etc, then launched into that. i thought i was gonna die. super fantastic setlist; good job to the guy who got the theme right.

afterwards we talked to jd for a bit about john green and colonoscopies and catcher in the rye and he wiped my already soaking wet ticket stub on his face and then signed it. which signature did not really work but was awesome.

up the (v)wolves was wonderful, as was the a cappella no children and also attention all pickpockets. and the other songs. john said that playing Hawaiian Feeling always transports him to another place, and you could really tell, it was totally captivating and enchanting to see.

it was freaking hot in there.

and it was so fun.

I have no idea Twi, but your description of the venue sounds accurate. The schedule for the place lists mostly small and local bands. It was my first time in Gainesville, and I loved that little area where the club is ... in walking distance, there was a record store, an art-house video rental store, a vegan ice cream store, two hookah/kava bars and a feminist/lesbian bookstore. Nice to be in a college town again.

This show was, indeed, magical. Well worth the 5+-hour drive from Fort Lauderdale -- this was the best tMG show of the 10 or so that I've seen. For Up the Wolves, John unplugged his guitar and went off mic to sing with the audience. This show had a theme, with the first letter of each song title spelling out GOING TO GAINESVILLE. I was the first to publicly acknowledge this in the crowd, and John awarded me the set list. At the end, he abandoned the conceit, just before "Last Man on Earth" was penciled in as a possibility.

The venue was eh. Oppressively stifling, but cool to see John play a tiny club again.

If I remember correctly, this is in the same place where Common Grounds Coffee House used to be. I went there once, long ago, to see Wesley Willis. Long, narrow floor area with--back then--a stage that could have been taller. I so would have braved it to see John though, if only there had been tickets! Common Grounds is now in the super cozy spot that used to be the Covered Dish. Sounds like the show was truly amazing. Sounds like the next book will be wonderful too. *looks forward to the future*

Though I know I am biased in saying this because not only was I actually in attendence, but it was only my second tMG show, it was by far my favorite performance (compared to bootlegs, etc.). I was certain I wouldn't be able to go, but I was super lucky and was able to buy tickets outside from a very nice fan! Everyone I met was real nice and totally respectful, except maybe the guy who held a camera right in front of John after he asked everyone to put away their cameras and just sing (which led to John taking and then maybe accidentally breaking the camera). Either way, awesome show! Many thumbs up and several stars John!

I fully endorse these comments. It's the best show I've heard or seen, and I had the added bonus of actually being there. Everyone I met could not have been more friendly, especially John himself, who clearly puts his fans first and goes out of his way to delight the devoted followers. The guy using the camera after John specifically asked for no cameras during the song was very disrespectful, but he seemed to take the news of his camera's possible demise at the hands of one John Darnielle rather well, so I suppose it's all good. There is something unbelievably cathartic about a large, diverse group of tMG fans packed into a tiny bar screaming "I hope you die, I hope we both die."

I went to the show with my mother, whom I introduced to seven tMG albums on the car ride down from Tallahassee. She stepped outside the bar after Oceanographer's Choice, but she still seemed to have a great time and enjoyed talking to JD after the show.

Oh yeah, I know who you were! Congratulations on the setlist, man. Did you get it signed? I was the guy a few feet away from you repeatedly screaming "Going to Georgia" before the final encore. Great times...

This show was, indeed, magical. Well worth the 5+-hour drive from Fort Lauderdale -- this was the best tMG show of the 10 or so that I've seen.

He didn't request that anything not be shared, so I guess it's cool. He has been working on a new novel off and on for quite some time now. It's close to completion and only three people have read the manuscript. He did a reading of the first chapter, and I won't go into details about it, but it is completely brilliant and the prose and themes are instantly recognizable as the work of John Darnielle. If the rest of the book is as beautifully written as its first chapter, it could potentially be known one day as a Great American Novel, and I say that objectively and without fanboyish delusion. JD is on to something very special here, and I will be purchasing a copy as soon as possible.
