Bumping this thread (the title of which is going to be misleading and depressing to my fellow PGHers) because I have a very burning request:

I despereatly need a recording of this show. April 12, 2011; Mr. Small's Theatre, Pittsburgh PA.

I don't think one exists, but if anyone has one, knows where I can find one, or can direct me to the proper archaic text contianing a ritual to summon one from the depths of the void (blood sacrafices A-OK), please let me know.

I don't really have much to offer in return. I'm not really a tape collector, I just really want this specific show because I was there and it was a good memory, and I could use more of those.

I'll chip in with my singing-along-at-gigs story (I'm with the ayes on this btw).

When I saw Pixies on their reunion tor at Manchester Apollo in '05 they started playing "Hey" and about 2 lines in Kim Deal decided she didn't want to play it because she wanted a cigarette rather than to sing backing vocals, but the WHOLE PLACE just continued to sing the song from start to (pretty much-) finish. Now I realise a Pixies gig and a tMG gig are completely different animals, but I think there's something to be said for the communal feeling of singing along with the songs you love. Granted, there's only 4 and a bit album worth of Pixies songs so pretty much everyone there knew every word of every song they were ever going to play, and you're rarely going to hear the crowd over the band, but even in my limited experience of tMG shows (one JD & PPH, one JD solo, one full band) I've found that the crowds have been loud when it warrants it, and quiet and reverent as the occasion demands.

I've just read that back to myself, and I'm so glad there's no prize here for well thought out opinions...

Even the Dinu Lipatti thing happened. Everyone sang along with that so well. It was an even more unifying experience than when everyone at the Flaming Lips show sang along with Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots.

I'd like to butt in a little late here and make a comment about the singing along stuff....

IMO, ya gotta feel out the vibe of the crowd. If you're the only one singing, theres a problem.

But I remember in the DC show on 3/25, there was an awesome moment during Dinu Lapati's Bones... He started off playing the opening chords, and everyone immediately recognized it. as soon as he started singing, so did the entire crowd, in perfect unison. No drunken shouting, not talking, just singing. And those first few words "we stank of hairdye and amonia" were echoed all around the inside of the hall. It was such a stirring moment, John went "woah" and then went on with the song. It was one of those moments that really reminds you why you're there in the first place. To see the mountain goats play for one thing, but I think it's bigger than that. If there was a DVD of the mountain goats playing live, it would be awesome, but it wouldn't be the same. You go to the concerts (or at least I do) to feel the unity that can only come from live music. At my school, I only know like three people who have even heard of the mountain goats, and none of them are that big of fans. But those moments in concerts when you feel that you are surrounded by people who are just as passionate about it as you are almost magical.

Also, have you ever been in the front row when they play a song like Family Happiness or No Children? When John screams "I hope you die" in my face, you can bet your ass I'm going to sing it back.

i had THE BESTTTT time at this concert!!! i was dead center in the front. John kept using my head as a balancing post as he crawled into the crowd to shake hands, spit on us, etc. It was magical. He shook my brothers hand, gave the guy next to me a biggggg hug, and literally cupped my cheek in his hand and sang "i hope i cut myself shaving tomorrow i hope it bleeds all day long" into my face while grinning like a mad man. I died. Family happiness was amazing. Like a man possessed. I love John Darnielle and the rest of the band was fantastic. And Megafaun was so fun. ahhhhhh. I cant wait to see them again someday!!!

I was huddled up against the speakers on the far left, nodding, stomping, singing and thrashing like a madman. Seeing bands that I really enjoy is a huge treat. Seeing the Mountain Goats was a fucking religious experience, and nothing less. I felt like one of those people who dance with snakes, that's how bad I thrashed around when I testified at the pulpit of the goats.

I was dancing and hopping like a maniac, and there was one girl in front of me enjoying herself. (no idea your gender or anything I don't get on the board much) I didn't bump people or anything. I was against the rail in the 21+ area I was like fuck it, they didn't pay to see me so they probably aren't watching me :)

I was up towards the front, right by the entrance, a few rows back. A girl in a yellow flannel and green hat but I ended up getting too sweaty and took it off.

I LOVED Family Happiness, too! Ugh and Alpha Incipiens!

The show surpassed expectations. I could not have asked for more, the mix of songs was outstanding the energy was great. I love that little Johnny Worster kid. Plus I loved the opening band. OMG John's jacket! he looks younger than when I saw him last, of course that was in DC right before he got sick so take that for what it's worth. The highlight was
family happiness for me.

I didn't see any board people. When i got there I ran up to the front and kinda looked for the sign, didn't see one, but made some awkward eye contact with a guy in a black jacket, I saw him again as I was leaving. I hope you a board guy black jacket guy, otherwise there is a dude in a black jacket who thinks I want him awkwardly.
