I recorded The Recognition Scene too, but it was so sonic (and I was fortunately in the front row, which added to the beauty of the experience) that it came out completely distorted. Small price to pay.

So (real quick) Thanks to Wild Creature for the ticket much, much, appreciated! I tried to record the show, first my batteries died in my recorder, then I made a poor mans version wiuth my phone. Only to come home try to upload it and have my computer completley crash on me. So I take it that the divine force of the universe does not want this magical evening to be heard again. I know how much that sucks because I have missed out on a few great TMG shows myself. But trust us this was a preformance that will go down in history asoneof the greats!

SPOILER ALERT:

In regards to set list:

I think that the first song actually from Sweden (e.g. not unreleased) was Snow Crush Killing Song. That would put it four or so tracks in, I think.

Like I said earlier, I think that The Recognition Scene was played as the house was robbed and the Parson's family was killed.

I think that Prana Ferox was the song that they played as the robbers got away and then dumped their sleigh and horse under the ice, but I could be wrong.

Sept. 19 Triple X Love! Love! Love! was played fairly early on. I can't remember exactly where, but it was somewhere fitting with the "I will do as I am told/I will keep away the cold" refrain. I might remember if I saw it again.

Some songs that definitely weren't played: Tollund Man, Going to Queens, California Song.

Can anyone add to this or confirm or deny pieces of this? My memory is pretty spotty about exactly what happened and I'd love to get it a bit more clear.

Quote
nigel

Quote
kylebarbour
... He gave me a big hug...

The most surprising thing in the entire thread(!) I didn't know JD did hugs very often? or is that just handshakes?

I don't know, but it seemed really comfortable for him. He just immediately came up to me and gave me a solid hug, before we'd even started talking. It seemed completely natural.

As for the show itself, it sounds really interesting! And I think that's a particularly apt word for me to use-- normally when I'm reading about cool tMG shows, especially shows where they try something different or the setlist is pretty awesome (as it was this night,) I feel this intense longing to have been there. But with this show I almost feel more curious as to how it would work out and how it sounded than I feel "oh, I wish I was there" and all that.

As for the JV backing band, I LOVE Jamie Riotto's double bass playing. I'm sure it was phenomenal.

I've got the film saved on my hard drive (not the music, though, obviously) and I'll probably watch it soon. Even just reading the plot summary of it made me go "good choice with the Goats on this one..." It just feels like the kind of thing that JD would love.

I think it may be tacky to say I hope someone got a recording... but I certainly do hope y'all who saw it will be able to put together a setlist. I've got my copy of Sir Arne's Treasure sitting here, and I'd like to approximate the setlist for when I watch it.

Not trying to brag, but just as a fact that surprised me: I knew about the germ thing with JD before I met him for the first time, and I think I've only shaken his hand once or twice, but as far as I can recall, I've had five or so hugs. So maybe he is cooler with the hugs than the handshakes?

God this sounds creepy. Might black dot it later.

I just want to say that the show was amazing. I was in the fifth row, loved it. I was amazed how well it worked with the film.

The Recognition Scene was fantastic. They played it as the robbers broke into the Parson's house, if I remember correctly - perfect. But for me the highlight of the show were the first songs played, the unreleased ones. I only remember a few lyrics, something about icicles. Just wonderful. And the other highlight was the amazing rendition of Snow Crush Killing Song. I wish I'd remembered to tape it, but so it goes.

I waited after the show because for years, after all his music has done for me, I've wanted to thank him, and since there's no backstage at the Castro I figured I might actually have a chance this time. And sure enough, after talking to an incredibly kind woman working for the SFFS, and waiting until the theater was practically empty, John came down and talked to me for a bit. I couldn't believe it. He gave me a big hug, and I thanked him for how much his music means to me and everything it's done for me, and he really seemed to understand. He actually seemed touched on some level even though I'm sure he gets this all the time. What a phenomenal human being. I hope I was able to convey some amount of how important his music has been to me in my life, because words feel so inadequate trying to communicate that kind of deep emotion. I couldn't believe he was willing to spend five minutes talking to me about the show and what his work meant to me.

I still can't believe it happened. I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to thank someone that's produced work that means so much to me.

the rocking version of recognition scene was, for me, the best version of that song i've heard.

totally agree. the other highlight for me was Prana Ferox.

Quote
Wild Creature
it was a wonderful evening in a beautiful theater with music that was familiar yet performed in a way i'd never heard before.

Quote
Wild Creature
the rockier stuff was, I think, heavier than anything I've heard from the MGs before,

also agree with this stuff. they did a great job of starting the full band songs slowly, building a groove and ascending to awesome climaxes. and when those songs were at their peaks it was way more of a Rock Show then even the three-man shows (or four-man on the tour with Perry) of these last few years.

also i have no idea who the rhythm section was but ho man did they kill it.

As I understand it, the songs were new songs, with old Sweden-era lyrics that were not used. The 1st two songs seemed to be new, in that they were in the musical style of the MGs newer stuff. Quiet, solo piano, it reminded me of what being in the audience for the LOTWTC film would have felt like. Very beautiful. There were one or 2 other songs in the full band set that I didn't recognize, so I don't know if those were Sweden outtakes or the same thing, Sweden-era lyrics with new music. I will say, though, that the rockier stuff was, I think, heavier than anything I've heard from the MGs before, so it may say something to how the new album will be, which is exciting to consider.

It was extremely good and very interesting. Started with JD on piano. Then he switched to acoustic guitar. For the final 1/2 hour or so, he was joined by an electric guitar (John Vanderslice, I'm assuming), stand -up bass and drums. It was all songs, many of which I didn't recognize, and a few which I did. (and I know the Sweden album fairly well). I'm pretty sure some of the songs were new. Very interesting and enjoyable. It was a bit hard for me to pay attention to both the band and the film, but my the end, I was getting the hang of it. It really built up from very quiet songs on the piano to a climax with the band. It made the ending of the film exciting. At the end, JD mentioned that it was the most nervous he'd been in a long time - he said he's no longer nervous doing tMG songs at all, but this was different.

I was sitting up close. At the end of the show, JD gave some of his handwritten lyrics to the guy sitting next to me, who seemed to be a friend of his. I was tempted to ask him for just one page, but I didn't want to be a pest.
