I looked I really did but IRREGARDLESS to what john says I can't find any, not one piece of fan fiction. WHICH MEANS we are going to have to be the ones to write it. I'd like to see some that follow the Variation that john talked about, but i dosen't have to. SO GIMME YOUR BEST.I'll post one on here later today

So I'm going to be selling my Why You All So Thief 7" and my All Survivors Pack tape. If I were to sell them both how much do you think they would go for? It pains me to see these items go, but this venue is really important to me, and I'll do anything to keep it alive. So if someone could help me out and tell me how much these would probably go for.
What John Darnielle penned material saw release in the year 2002?

I'm asking because, according to wikipedia, it seems like an almost impossibly prolific year, with the following releases: All Hail West Texas, Tallahassee, Martial Arts Weekend, Devil in the Shortwave, Jam Eater Blues, and See America Right.

That's a total of three albums, and three EPs / singles.

So a good year for fans. If these were all released then.

Hey lovely people of the forum. It's been a while since I've been on here (read: several years).
The other day I was talking to my friend about really good bitter love songs. We figured the best ones are the songs that aren't too literal, but more subtle, and still really bitter songs. So that led me to talk about JD and his song writing. But I couldn't remember which song would be the perfect example. Give me some ideas, so I can forward these to my friend!
"Standard Bitter Love Song no 8" crossed my mind, it's a pretty great, bitter song. But there's so many more, especially some of the Alpha couple songs. Alright, shoot!
Write a poem (any form you like) as a parody of JD's lyrical style. Submit, we'll vote, etc; winner receives one (1) newish copy of the EP. (Newish = was purchased new, has been played several times, but mostly just sits there.)
Rules:
1. Must have at least 20 posts to vote. So no inviting friends to vote for you, but members who hawk fake watches are eligible.

On Soft Targets as an Alpha Couple song (20 replies)

I originally posted this to my tumblr but I am posting it here too because Soft Targets as a Alpha Couple song is something I am very passionate about

I feel like Soft Targets is a song from the early stages of the Alpha Couple. Back when they were young and weren’t quite as broken. I feel like it’s back when there was still hope that somehow things would be okay. Back when “we’ve got our love to carry us through” was still something they could murmur to each other and even sort of believe.

“it’s you and it’s me and the baby makes three”, I like to think that Alpha Female was pregnant, and Alpha Male believes that maybe the baby will make them love each other and stay together. Something happens sometime after this song and Alpha Female gets an abortion/miscarries, and then they have No Children (Tallahassee) and this is just one more thing breaking them.

but even in Soft Targets “there is nobody innocent here”, the singer (Alpha Male?) realizes already that they are not pure beings, the signs are already showing.

“the ghost of future’s awake in the attic / he moans and he wails as he rattles his chain” is the baby kicking inside Alpha Female, and singer (I think Alpha Male, but I tend to think Alpha Male is the one singing in most Alpha Couple songs) is seeing what a future could be, together as a family (this clearly does not happen).

The song ends with “when i hunt down the vampire who did this to us / i will rip out his heart with my hands”, I take this two ways. Either the singer is referencing their relationship and the fault lines in it. Or if Alpha Female is singing this line is precursor to her aborting the baby.

Each time I listen to this song I think the singer is different, and sometimes I think maybe both of them are singing (first two verses are Alpha Male, last two are Alpha Female?). Which would work with Alpha Male thinking that they’ve got love and a baby on the way, and Alpha Female thinking that something is wrong with her (maybe because she doesn’t want the baby) and wanting to hurt the vampire who did this to them.

Even the name makes me think it’s an Alpha Couple song. A “Soft target is a military term referring to unarmored/undefended targets needing to be destroyed. For example, a soft target would be an automobile, a house, or assembly of people while a hard target could be a main battle tank or a well defended installation. This can also be applied to apparent readiness. A person who varies their schedule or avoids patterns, has solid looking security measures on their home, or other forms of visible readiness would not be a soft target. A soft target for surveillance would have little variance in travel patterns and a visibly low state of situational awareness.” (wikipedia.org/wiki/Soft_target). Tell me that the Alpha Couple is not a Soft Target and I will tell you that you are wrong.

Hey all, I know my small post count probably screams "lurker" immediately, but I have the best of intentions. I'm midway through that incredibly grueling process of building up my Mountain Goats collection and so far going on information from a meager amount of lists and Wikipedia. That said, I've found some holes in my search--notably, a whole bunch of dead links to songs John's given away for free over the years. I was just wondering if anyone had a list of all these online sort of "gift" releases? Thanks.

I am having a lively discussion with someone who thinks that Isaac Brock from Modest Mouse has the market cornered on lyricism, especially "misanthropic and/or nihilistic" (my friend's words) stuff. Now, I love Modest Mouse , but, obviously, I just don't agree with my friend.

I have promised to make him a TMG playlist - about 15 songs - that will convince him John is at least on the same level as Isaac, particularly on the specific fronts mentioned above. Although my friend's beliefs suggest he is unaware of the Alpha series, I don't want it to be solely Alpha songs. So far this is what I've got:

Autoclave
Ezekiel 7
Family Happiness
Alpha Desperation March
Counting Song for Bitter Children
No Children (impossible to avoid considering the theme)

So...ideas?

Hi all-

I am looking for an original physical copy of the Life of the World in Flux bonus CD that was available through Rough Trade. I failed to pick one up when they were released and I’ve been searching in the usual places for a while with no luck so I thought I would ask here.

If anyone picked up an extra copy with which they would be willing to part, please let me know. I’d be happy to pay a reasonable price. Alternatively, I have a 2005 tour shirt (the blue one with “Dance Music” in yellow lettering) in excellent condition that I’d trade for a copy.
Thanks
