Hail and Farewell

So I hope I don't violate some unwritten rule here, but I'm going to go ahead and say it.

This is the thread for anything concerning the lost album, "Hail and Farewell Gothenburg"

John, I won't take it personally if this thread is quietly removed...and I'll also go ahead and say, this is not the place for "holy shit man, do you have it? can you send it to me? etc. etc"

Seyrussly...none of that

I just read this thread for the first time just now, and my copy of HAFG was downloaded July 14, 2006 when i discovered and spent all summer listening to nothing but Goats.

besides being in shock and being devastated about John's feelings on this album right now, one thought i have is if he considers this material "garbage", what other amazing and never leaked works did he consider garbage and delete once the boneheadedness of those of us like monkeyskull showed up?

It's no one person's fault, but the fault of human nature. Monkeyskull was the "adam" who committed the original sin, but any one of us following him would have done the same thing. Like John has repeatedly said, this is the reality artists must cope with in the world we live in now.

i don't have an ear for music so it never registered these songs were sped up or at a higher tone than they should be. the thought had actually crossed my mind that these songs were "less low-fi" than so much of his other old work (pre-Tallahassee i consider old Goats; since then is the new Gost).

Since summer 2006 TMG has been tied for my favorite band ever (with Owen), and by listening to this album i have contributed to the wiping off the face of the planet TMG songs which (since admittedly i don't have an ear for music) i and the so many others like me probably would have loved.

what have i done?

i guess it's feasible you could give birth bunches of times at home and then you could just destroy them if you didn't think they should escape out into the world.

i spent years not listening to this album. i finally broke down and listened to it about a year ago, when i was right on the edge of jumping off a ledge, quite literally. even then, i almost didn't listen, but i was so close to losing everything, in all my fog and uncertainty, i thought, man if JD thought it would help even a little bit, he would want me to listen to it instead of doing what i had gone to that ledge to do. so, whether it was really what JD would have wanted or not, i went home and listened to it. didn't jump. so yeah, i still owe JD a big hug for that one. and pretty much everything i am or will ever be, too, for that matter.

anyways, doesn't solve your conundrum, but that is how i first heard this album.

aw man. This is a long story which results in this comment.
So I was looking on Spotify to find All Hail West Texas to listen to whilst I do work. (I have no money to buy music right now, so I'm living with Spotify for the time being) But that album isn't there so I was looking for it online and on the wikipedia site saw mention of 15 outtakes from the album which were supposed to be released free but weren't after Hail and Farewell Gothenburg, so I look up HaFG and download it (I have this irritating curiousity) and then I'm like, hang on, need to find out more about it so I'm reading most of this thread, and I'm going:
"Well, yeah, he didn't want people to hear it and now some have and some haven't, but he's now got rid of other ones which, in the future, people may have heard. Isn't that kind of unfair to the people who won't download or listen to it?"
Which I guess it is, but then all of that stuff is his music anyway, so whatever he does with it is what he wants, right?
But, then again, if everyone had followed what people said to the letter, we wouldn't have Kafka or Keats or Emily Dickinson or a bucket-load of other works to... um, work with. And the album won't be bad, so much, but it might not be very good either.
The thing is, I've lived so far without it. A very small amount of time I've lived with the knowledge of it. John Darnielle doesn't want people to download it, or listen to it. I'll feel like the most selfish person in the world if I listen to it after he's been so nice about it all. But is it selfish just to have it right now, and not listen to it until he gives it the okay? But he's not going to give it the okay, I know that, so essentially I'm just keeping it, raising the chances of me hearing it, making me (still) the most selfish person in the world. Ugh. This is horrible. I listened to Taboo VI, btw, because he seemed to be okay with that.
(And I still can't find a place I can listen to All Hail West Texas, so I guess I'll just have to save up for it.)
