If I may direct you to this excellent examination of Transcedental Youth, posted on this forum, you will at least see the backstory of the song. The particular meanings of certain lyrics, especially the chorus, are up for interpretation. That's some of the fun of tMG, the open, philosophical nature of the songs.

i can say with absolute certainty that it's a fine little ditty with a somewhat catchy but, in the end, meaningwhat chorus.

i've coined the term "meaningwhat" just for this chorus. it means, "what does it mean."

what does this song mean? who does it pertain to? it certainly doesn't pertain to me. it's more like a chinese fingertrap than a great lyric. just because it makes me go HMM doesn't mean it's good. it makes no sense, and therefore is meaningless. to me. i always forget those two words. to me. evidently it makes sense to somebody, which is great. they can explain it to me.

I don't know about 10, as my favorites are an ever amorphous blob, but I can, with some certainty, say that Harlem Roulette is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. I'm really bad with LotWtC because, and this is gonna sound really stupid, I can never remember the names of the songs. It's all just some random word with little to no meaning to me followed by some numbers. I do quite like Genesis 3:23, and it helps that I actually get the Eden parallel. I mainly stick to the LP's for casual listening, if only because I heard them first and am most comfortable with them, so the EP's are rather low on my personal list.

That was a disjointed paragraph, but, in summation, SCREW YOU, tMG IS STILL GOOD.

i'm hoping i'll change my mind and maybe at least one of these songs would indeed go on a 2 disc set called 'the mountain goats greatest hits' with songs such as "no children," "golden boy," "the best ever death metal band in denton," "up the wolves" and more..........and not on the third disc in an anthology...you know, the one that nobody ever listens to.

although, you forgot genesis. it's obviously the best song on LOTWTC.

Alright, here's my thoughts on "tMG songs I don't like"

Early tMG is a bit hit-and-miss for me, but because I came by Zopilote Machine, Nothing for Juice, and all three 3BoS comps at the same time, and had heard many of those songs through bootlegs, etc. before, I don't have a clear conception of the albums/comps involved. That is, none of the songs really go together for me. I probably like half to 2/3 of it, and there are some I don't really care for in there too. But Sweden and FFG through Get Lonely, I like every song on all those albums. I tend to like albums as a whole. But the last four have been hit-and-miss again for me. Songs (on major releases) I tend to skip:

HP: So Desperate, Marduk, & Swamp Creature
LotWtC: everything except Psalms & Ezekiel
AED: Age of Kings, Sourdoire Valley, & Outer Scorpion Squadron
TY: White Cedar, Until I Am Whole, & In Memory of Satan

Pretty much everything else I enjoy.

Nobody cares how much pre-4AD stuff you've heard, but I'm not sure how you see SAM as a sop to the lo-fi era, especially given the drums. It and Oceanographer's Choice struck me as the two biggest differences from what came before. At the time, there were even allegations of Strokes-bandwagon jumping!

I don't mind the Casio songs, but I can't listen to the album version of California Song with the Casio. I have to listen to live versions of just guitar and/or bass with the crowd screaming along. That is the only way California Song can be heard, and for me, the Casio fucks that atmosphere up.

actually i fell so much in love with the casio version that i didn't even really like the live version the first time i heard it. the pacing was different and it just threw me. but maybe there wasnt enough crowd screaming, atlanta's just not the best place to see tmg i guess

i just dont know how you can't enjoy the delicacy of the casio version
